I saw a copy of the National Rail timetable on sale in John Menzies' in Leicester, although I'm not sure if it was quite the same thing. It was definitely current although the cover was with a photo and it seemed to be published by a company called TSO. Inside the format seemed to be pretty much the same as it used to be. Anyone know what this is?

Official production of the National Rail Timetable stopped a year or two back. Permission was given for others to produce it, TSO (as I understand it) decided that, having produced the book on behalf of 'National Rail', they would quite like to keep producing it. That is probably the book you saw.

A quick Google found the TSO website (I think this used to be Her Majesty's Stationery Office before it was privatised) and found the Summer 2009 timetable on sale for £15.00 + postage.

Link here if it works...

You can also buy the fares CD Rom at the same time.

Thanks for that, it may well be cheaper elsewhere,at least without postage £3/75

Suppose for 3K of pages its not a bad price, plus rail network maps.

It is usually cheaper from Amazon with free delivery - the exact price varies over time.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/GB-Rail-Tim...=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1247213620&sr=8-2

the main thing to watch is that when the new version is published, amazon seem to be quite slow to receive their copies (maybe TSO don't like amazon offering free delivery?) - I had pre-ordered one & Amazon still hadn't got it available 2 weeks after publication so cancelled it & walked into my local bookshop where it was on the shelf.

This is the version that is published by TSO.

Looks very similar to the (now discontinued) version published by Network Rail, although with a cover price of £15-00, it's three pounds more expensive, and you don't get a fold-up UK route map insert any more.

The Middleton Press also do their own version. Cost is £14.95.

Have recently seen both on sale at WH Smith outlets at major railway stations.

I did think about buying this in April for May 2009

I downloaded and saved mine from network rail as soon as it became available at the beginning of May
