5/5/17 - What's your favourite type of potato?
Firstly, I know what you're thinking. Rest assured it'll be revealed in good time!
With the wife off on a hen do in Cheltenham I had to get a taxi to Stockport in time for the 0643 on Friday, arriving in good time to grab a tea from Starbucks. I was briefly startled by
57305+306 top and tail the Northern Belle stock, which rumbled through towards Victoria, but the remaining 20 minutes passed slowly as I waited for
390127 to take me to Euston. I opted for coach U, bagging a priority table to myself (at least until Rugby) and then nodded off until the approach to Nuneaton. First into the book for the day arrived here, with
66710 heading towards Trafford Park with 4M21. Nothing of note on Wembley, so I popped for a quick PNB before we arrived at Euston 5 late.
Down to the underground, and with the ticket machine finally accepting my card after 7 goes I was armed with my 1-6 travelcard, and set off for the Northern line; destination London Bridge. Going against the flow made things a bit easier, and I arrived at the National Rail platforms to, well, not much. A sweep of the Southern side did throw up
377102, but nothing else, so I headed up to the island of platforms 6/7, which I figured would give the best views of the Southeastern stuff that currently passes non-stop through what will be platforms 1/2, as well as workings through the higher-numbered platforms.
I'd not long started when I was approached by a Network Rail station supervisor and asked what I was writing in my book, but when I explained he seemed happy enough to leave me to my own devices. I did so for the next hour or so, racking up a good number of winners, particularly 465s:
Binoculars needed for a good number of the above, and translating carriage numbers for the SE stuff that went 'round the back,' as it was impossible to get views of front-ends.
From here it was to Moorgate, then across to Liverpool Street, before taking
315803 to Bethnal Green. The weather picked up a bit as I arrived, and I headed back under the platforms to the opposite side, settling down to pick off everything heading out towards Stratford and Hackney Downs. It was here that, after about 30 minutes, two old ladies came and sat next to me, and their conversation somehow turned to their favourite method of cooking a potato. Things became rather heated (baked versus roasted, since you ask), and I was invited to step in and mediate. Eventually, it was decided, with some resistance from the loser, that roasted was best, and things concluded just as their 315 rolled in to take them into the city. Thankfully things concluded just as
345006 rolled passed, also towards Liverpool Street. First 345 sighting and initial impressions from a distance are that they look pretty good. Odd with no yellow front end, but certainly different. It came back passed some 15 minutes later and was then followed by
345005 on the same route some 30 minutes after.
Time up, it was aboard
315812+808 back into Liverpool Street, and across to Baker Street. Here it was a short walk to Marleybone, interrupted briefly by the wife ringing to ask how to open the fuel cap on the car, and a quick 50-minute stint, mainly in order to get
172102/103/104 in the book, and in the process clear the remainder of the 172 class. Nothing else appeared that was required, so it was via Boots for a meal deal and then across to Paddington.
With the customary sweep of the platforms done (
43147, 43180 &
166214 the winners), it was aboard
165102 for the planned run out to Ealing Broadway. A proper treat was forthcoming not long after setting off, as
800002+001 were seen arriving into Paddington on test, heading into subsequently reverse into North Pole. Must say I love the look of them, a fitting successor to the 43s in my eyes. Not sure that'll go down well with some on here, but I struggle to get misty-eyed over the older traction.
Ealing Broadway arrived, not before I finally saw
332014 on Old Oak Common, to clear the second class of the day. The Crossrail-related building works are progressing nicely now and mean that the shelter I use to spot from now has far better sightlines, particularly with regards the fast lines. I got chatting to a lovely old couple after 10 minutes or so, who were thrilled when I provided them with the numbers for the aforementioned 800s (which theyd just missed seeing fully), and I helped them with a number of the 43s that flew passed slightly too quickly for them to ID. They ambled back to Didcot, via Oxford, after 15 minutes or so, and I was left to my own devices to pick up a good deal of winners, including
66023 working 7V69 from Crawley to Acton.
With 3pm now arriving I was eager to get across to East Croydon and drop my bag off at the EasyHotel, so it was the Central line to Shepherds Bush,
387257 to the Junction (picking up
47848 in the yard in disgrace as I walked along the overbridge), then a cosy pairing of
377429+119 to East Croydon. Bag lightened I was quickly back out into the early evening, with
377126+455 back to Clapham to take up my usual spot at the London end of 9/10. As always with Clapham I had to switch on very quickly as units flew through, but it was a roaring success all told. Highlights were the third different pair of 707s in the book, this time
007+008 returning off test for a trip through the washers. Slightly disappointed I only managed one of the three remaining GatEx requirements,
387217, but such is life.
I decided to call it quits about half six, just in time to witness a fight break out on platform 8. Were talking a full-blown commuter punch-up, which almost resulted in both men on the tracks. Most odd.
5869 arrived to take me to Waterloo, before the Northern line to Elephant & Castle. A mildly confusing walk via the shopping centre to the National Rail platforms then followed, arriving just in time to get
700044 to St Pancras. I was contemplating a stint at West Hampstead, but, in need of a feed and water I instead hopped off at Blackfriars (picking up
319002 as I alighted), and went to a delightful little pizzeria hidden away down the back streets. Indeed by the time Id finished chatting to the owner and left it was 2100, so I decided to head back to base. A walk down the river to burn off the pizza saw me reach Victoria 25 minutes later, and
377110 was taken to East Croydon. The final spots of the day were
377103 &
377511 and, with that, it was off back to the EasyHotel, and a 0515 alarm set for Saturdays venture into new territory...
6/5/17 To Ilford, and Beyond!
After an ok(ish) nights sleep, disturbed by a half-naked women mistakenly banging on my door instead of hers round the corner at 0330, it was a quick shower and out into the early morning air, with the 0547 Thameslink service to Bedford, formed of
700101,taking me to Farringdon at an achingly slow pace. We went via Norwood Junction, where as I swear last time I went via Streatham, which might have added to things, but the slow pace did allow me to pickup
700010 and
700021 en-route. From here it was a short wait for a Met line service to Liverpool Street. After grabbing a tea and croissant it was onto
90009 pushing
82114 along, and we departed bang on 0700, quickly emerging into the spring sunshine. Spotify fired up I settled back to see if anything required was already up and out. Sadly nothing doing, but plenty to keep an eye on, including the Crossrail works nearing completion at Shenfield, and the Lizzy line 345s from yesterday sitting at Ilford depot.
As we ventured passed Shenfield, and into new territory, we slowed noticeably as we caught up with a 360 in front on a stopper, and things became very stop-start all the way along as a result. It did, however, mean that we passed through Marks Tey some seven late, and as such arrived just after
153314 working the Sudbury branch. Not only was this the first AGA DMU in my book, but also meant I no longer had to add in a 20 minute stop at Marks Tey on the way back later in the day. Every cloud has a silver lining, as they say. Further bonuses as we progressed towards Norwich included
321313 at Manningtree, and
90003 at Witham.
Eventually, Norwich arrived, sadly minus the sun, which departed just after the sprawling plains disappeared near Ipswich. Alighting I was struck by the subtle charm of the station, clearly once a thriving hub that is now slightly quieter. There was nothing occupying any of the other platforms, save for a dud EMT 158. Checking RTT there was little of interest coming within the next 30 minutes, so I wandered to the nearby Morrisons for supplies, before returning to the London end of platforms 3/4 to observe the comings and goings for another couple of hours. Not much, truth be told, but when your hunting just 26 DMUs its to be expected.
1130 arrived and it was thus aboard 82127, dragged along by
90008, for the 35 minute trip to Ipswich. I bagged a table of four but had to turn the tunes up pretty loud in the headphones to drown out a hen party opposite. A major bonus was seeing
90001 being shunted into the sheds on Crown Point, which means the AGA 90s are now cleared
Ipswich arrived, with the sun trying manfully to come out as I alighted. Mildly shocked to see Giles Brandreth wandering around the station, I took up residence at the country end of platform 2, watching the shunts occurring around the Freightliner depot opposite in between a smattering of winners. I feel sorry for the residents directly behind the depot, the almost constant yinging of the 66s must get quite wearing, particularly in the wee small hours.
I picked up a strawberry and banana smoothie at around 1445, and then took a seat in the deserted pairing of
360104+103 for the stopper back to Stratford. Having originally planned to visit Marks Tey I had split tickets for the way back, which did mean I had to turn down the 90 that leaves 10 minutes earlier, but I was in no real rush. Again I got to have a good look at everything on the opposite side of the tracks, including
321442 at Colchester,
315823 at Shenfield, and
08573 and
321448 on Ilford depot.
Eventually, Stratford arrived, and with 3 hours to kill before my 390 from Euston I settled in the intermittent sunshine to see if I could whittle the AGA stuff down any further. Not much doing really, mainly 317s, but there was the added bonus of a C2C 357 on one of the Saturday Liverpool Street workings. In hindsight, I should perhaps have gone to West Ham for a bit of 357 hunting, but it slipped my mind.
1745 approached, so I wandered across to the Central line platforms, grabbing a seat for the run to Oxford Circus, then a quick squirt up to Euston. Sadly throngs of folk joined me aboard
390043, but I still managed to get two priority airline seats to myself. Sleep grabbed hold as soon as we passed Wembley, and I awoke again as we sped through Weedon.
57302 became the final Thunderbird in the book, clearing them some 14 months after the first, and the final winner was
66154 on Basford Hall.
All in all, a very good trip. Nice to make serious inroads into the Anglian DMU fleet, with 20 of the 26 snaffled, and to get the 172s, 332s and Anglia 90s cleared. Disappointed I couldnt get hold of the gen to clear GC, GN and VTEC, but that can wait for another day.
All told I managed 192 new sightings, which takes the relevant TOCs down to the following outstanding:
AGA: 47
c2c: 18
Chiltern: 22
GatEx: 2
Grand Central: 2
Great Northern: 7
GWR: 100
London Overground: 22
SWT: 85
Southeastern: 113
Southern: 52
Tfl Rail: 3
Thameslink: 48
VTEC: 2
A note as well that I managed to get
319448 yesterday, which reclears the Northern 319s that are in service.
Not sure where Ill be going next, or when. Im in Nottingham for a conference for a couple of day in June, so may hopefully get EMT finished off (I need 4x43s, 2x153s, 1x156 and 1x222), and then immediately afterwards Ive a day off which I might use to visit Leeds for the Northern stuff, particularly now 155346 is back in business. July may well see a day in Cardiff and Bristol again, as I can currently get them both for under £50, which is a bonus.
