I really enjoyed reading that, even though I've only got to the start of the passenger stuff. I'm only replying before finishing it to let you know that 70013 is one of the active ones, and is currently working this:

http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/H00075/2016/12/22/advanced

Good luck in getting it! Finally, yep, the east is better for GBRF, but you do get a fair bit in the west. GBRF will tend to have quite a few 66s parked up at Peterborough depot, which you pass if heading north from Peterborough on either the ECML or the line through towards Stamford, so maybe do that and Anglia at the same time if possible - if you can bare it then EMT from Stockport to Norwich would pass Peterborough and get you to Norwich. To get the most out of it then I suggest getting a hotel at Norwich too.

Well that has been a good year for you! The summary was an excellent read too, but ouch to the mega pile of needs on Southeastern! It took me almost 13 years to clear their fleet for sight mind!

I look forward to more reads from you in 2017, although I'll try and remember you have an enormous occasion in April so not to expect much around then. Ouch to potentially looking for a new job, I'm due to do similar come January and I hope it's through your own choice!

As for Belgium, I think the other half would probably enjoy an explore of Bruges. I don't remember a lot about it from when I went many years ago, it was before the Euro came in, but I vaguely remember it being nice to explore. Alternatively, make your way to Liege and get a train from there to Luxembourg, it's a gorgeous bit of scenery especially around the border, and take some beer and chocolates with you to enjoy! ;)

Happy 2017 to one and all! Just a quick update really with a few winners from last week, and plans for the coming few weeks.

Pleasingly Northern units continue to be whittled down towards the bare bones now, with a very, very cold Tuesday lunchtime spent at Manchester Victoria to get three winners in the book. First up was 153378, arriving ECS from Newton Heath to strengthen the afternoon workings of a dud 158 between Manchester and Leeds. 20 minutes of absolutely nothing then followed, before my penultimate Northern 156, 480, rolled in heading towards Kirby. Hot on its heels (and thus the cause of quite a quick climb of the stairs!) was 142086 squealing its way from Stalybridge to Wallgate, which takes the Northern 142s down to five. A quick squirt across to Salford Crescent aboard the aforementioned 142 also allowed me to snaffle 66172 in the process of unloading its hoppers at Hope Street. The week was rounded off with 158835 at Piccadilly, which was filling in for a poorly 175 on a Milford Haven service, and took my ATW 158 requirements down to five.

This brings me neatly onto next week, where I have three days off to celebrate my 29th year on the planet. Firstly I will be popping across to Leeds on Wednesday, arriving at 0946 (providing my daily 0805 from New Mills Central isn't too heavily delayed), to see if I can knock off most of the remaining Northern requirements, which now consist of the following:

  • 142016/018/019/078/084
  • 144001
  • 153316/360
  • 155346
  • 156479
  • 158787/791/905/909
  • 333007/012

Hopefully the vast majority of the above should go through Leeds at some point, and I can always amuse myself with a trip to Midland Road if there's a lull, particularly if 70013 is paying a visit as has been the case rather frequently recently. Not sure I'll grab all the 142s, most appear to be up in the north east at present, nor the 156, but if that is out to play west of the Pennines then I'll try and add that into the mix. I will also try and get my hands on the XC HST diagrams now the timetable has changed, see if the two remaining 43s are due through. I'm mindful that I need to be home for 1800 in order to go wedding menu sampling; life will not be worth living if I miss that!

Day after is first stop Cardiff Central aboard the 0639 from Stockport, changing onto the WAG at Shrewsbury. Upon arrival at 0958(ish) I'll settle in to the task of hopefully knocking off most, if not all, of the ATW 142s, 143s and 150s. I have my fingers crossed already that the remaining four XC 170s will show themselves whilst I am there as well. No doubt there will be a few GWR 43s thrown in there as well. Is there a particularly advantageous spot to observe at Central, or do I need to roam around a bit?

Once Cardiff is done I plan on getting the 1430 across to Bristol Temple Meads (arrival 1518) and spending a good few hours there to get a big chunk of the none-Turbo DMU stuff (That said there is now a 165 at St Philip's Marsh depot, ready for driver training, to possibly entice me), as well as further 43s. I'm there until 1900, which seems like quite a while, but the service patterns mean I'm unlikely to get that many duds in the 3.5 hours I'm there. Again, any advice on vantage points?

Come 1900 it's a voyager home <( Hopefully this will be offset by me catching some of the remaining LM requirements in and around New Street, but that's going to be a long shot. Might just have to fire up Spotify and catch up on some sleep!

February brings a Friday-Sunday in Scotland for the first time, followed two weeks later by London for four days. Words cannot express how excited I am about that one! After that it's weddings and honeymoons, but I got wind from the missus that she's away for a hen do in early-May, so I'm now looking at how I can best utilise these three days. I will see how January and February go first and then reassess priorities.

Dismayed no-one's yet offered advice on spotting locations!

Cardiff Central, my favourite spot 12 years ago was the east/Newport end of platform 3/4 (one of which you'll arrive on, probably 4). You get the majority of stuff there, save for anything that terminates from the west but there's not much of that. Even for those bits, simply walk down to the other end of platform 3/4 (the west/Swansea end). Of course, you won't be able to get what's on the Cardiff Bay shuttles unless you go to Queen Street or Bay.

Bristol Temple Meads, my favourite spot here 12 years ago was the north/Bath Spa end of 5/7 (odd numbered platforms at the north end, even numbers at the south/Taunton end) where you could see more or less everything going about. Some stuff (not much) terminates from the south at that end of the platform, and usually a DMU or two are stabled in the former bay platform 2 (you'll find it alongside platform 4 at the south end), so you'll need to go down that end at some point. Otherwise, whilst you're there, you should be fine to stay at the north end.

As for coming home, is there not an HST 30 minutes beforehand? If you're not on Advances, go home on it to Birmingham then go from there.

If I don't remember in the meantime, Happy Birthday!

Alas the Leeds trip next Wednesday is now a no-go as I have to stay in to oversee a new back door being fitted. Disappointing, but given the opportunity to have a kitchen free of draughts cannot be passed up!

Tech - Thank you for your sage advice as always! I had forgotten about the Bay shuttles, I'll pop across to Queen Street mid-morning and get what's on that. Will break things up a bit.

Re the trip home, I'm on an advanced to keep the cost down a bit, and an HST to Brum then voyager from there was substantially more expensive unfortunately :(

A shame that you have to endure the Voyager all the way back, but hopefully it'll be worth it

I hope you're prepared for a cold experience at both Cardiff and Bristol, they're not the warmest places to spot at!

Leeds being off for the sake of a new back door will indeed be worth it, we had the same here recently but thankfully others were at home while I was at work!

I must say the weather looks particularly nippy at both next week. The travel mug and scarf received for Christmas will be getting some good use, that's for sure!

Birthday Bonanza - 16-19/01/17

Birthday week, hooray! To ease myself into a two-day working week I was on a 9-5 on Monday which, whilst less preferential to the 8-4, did allow for a view of the rather rare sight of a pair of 156s working the Norwich-Liverpool Lime Street job. Clearly hard times at EMT currently. To improve matters further one of said 156 pair was 156411, which leaves me with just 156403 to find of the EMT fleet now.

Fast-forward a couple of days, and birthday itself. I had originally planned a half-day in Leeds to pick off more Northern units, but that was derailed as I was instead required to stay at home in order to supervise the fitting of my shiny new back door. After pick and mix for breakfast (29 going on 9!) the fitter arrived about 9, and sped through the job to depart about 2. With a few hours to kill I decided to head up to Peak Forest to see what was going on. It turns out there was quite a lot. 66069 was busy shunting its rake of hoppers for filling in the Cemex Sidings, with 60044 on the next road attached to a solitary tank. 66112 was idling in the sidings next to the depot 'house,' and after 15 minutes or so 60039 slugged its way under the bridge with a load of stone destined for Dallam. A couple of duds passed through, so I called it quits after 40 minutes of so and headed home via Tesco for some ingredients to bake me cake (I have to bake my own bloody birthday cake!).

And so to Thursday. With a 0545 alarm call I was then out of the house for 0605 and parked up at Stockport with time to spare for the 0639 to Milford Haven, a fairly decently loaded 175003, which was basically full by the time we left Wilmslow. A rare routing into platform 5 was explained shortly after as the delayed 390 to Edinburgh pulled into platform 6, and as such we left 5 late. The first winner of the day was had as we did leave, with 73962 partnered by 73964 either end of the NR test train that was taking a break at platform 4 after a mammoth overnight tour of the north west.

The darkness was lifting slightly, a good sign that winter is slowly giving way, but it was still a challenge to ID anything on Gresty Bridge. Thankfully a convoy of 37405, 66427 and 68022 were standing on one of the roads outside the depot, but everything inside the perimeter fence was too deeply shrouded in mist and darkness to get numbers off. I settled back and had a wee nap after that, knowing nothing of any note would be passing until I reached Shrewsbury.

The aforementioned duly arrived, and thankfully this is where I said goodbye to the 175. I have fond memories of Shrewsbury station, mainly based around traveling home from watching Stockport win at Gay Meadow down by the river, but never really paid much attention to its overall aesthetics. I had a wander round, nothing of note popped up, and then the rumble in the distance told me the WAG was upon us. 82307 was on the front, so I chose the back coach in order to get the full experience that 67012 would hopefully provide pushing from the back. To my surprise it was almost deserted on board, save for a few businessmen and three women off shopping in Cardiff, so I took the pair of seats on the right-hand side that I assume can accommodate a wheelchair opposite, cracked open the remainder of yesterday's pick and mix, and had an absolute wail of a time watching the Shropshire countryside whizz by. Hereford arrived, again nothing worth writing about, so I had the chance to enjoy yet more delightful scenery, particularly as we swung round and over the river into Newport. I vaguely remember making this journey some 6/7 years ago, possibly in reverse and certainly not on the WAG, but cannot remember much else. As we pulled into Newport a couple late I got the first 43s of many for the day, 43092 and 43151 heading back towards Paddington, along with my first GWR 158 in the shape of 158951.

As mentioned before, I’ve ventured to these parts before, many moons ago, and I cannot honestly remember what Cardiff Central looked like way back then. I took the opportunity as I alighted to have a look round all the platforms, including the recently opened new platform 8, before settling at the eastern end of platforms 3/4 as advised by Tech previously in this very thread. It was cold and overcast, but the travel mug was full of apple and cinnamon tea which kept me going. The seagulls were quite keen on me as well, and I nearly came a cropper whilst leaning against a lamppost when one landed overhead and proceeded to crap right by my feet. Needless to say I moved off sharpish!

Down to business, and it was an absolute feast. All the 142s and 143s were winners for the first hour, as were all the GWR 158s and 150s. The ATW 150s were slightly less forthcoming in terms of winners, but I still sourced a few, along with some of the 153s. I was planning to head to Queen Street for the Bay shuttle, but gen highlighted it was a dud, so I didn’t bother. Highlight in the first hour or so was undoubtedly 150002, newly deployed to the West from its previous postings out of Reading. It looked extremely sleek in the GWR green, and the internals weren’t too shabby either. Certainly looks a lot better than the 150 that Northern have refurbished and relivered.

Freight-wise, which is what I really enjoy, it was far better than expected, with a cluster between 1100 and 1240:

  • 66077 4C94 Margam to Cwmbargoed (1104)
  • 66506 6B68 Avonmouth Coal to Aberthaw Power Station (1113)
  • 66030 6M86 Margam to Dee Marsh (1148)
  • 66150 6H24 Llanwern Exchange Sidings to Margam (1210)
  • 66044 0M41 Margam to Round Oak (1236)

With that I decided it was time to head passed Canton depot to see if there was anything of note not coming out to play that I could pick off, particularly the only ATW 143 that remained (not bad going given I had none in the book three hours earlier!). All aboard 142085 for the short hop to Ninian Park then, and we crawled passed the carriage sidings which certainly helped, but sadly none of the units sitting in the slowly emerging sun were required. I hopped off at Ninian for a quick walk under the railway and back up to the opposite platform where 153323 arrived not 30 seconds later to carry me back to Central. Again I kept my eyes open for anything interesting and was rewarded with 70810 which was parked up on the Colas sidings next to the TMD.

Back at Central just in time to see 66001 on 6V05 Round Oak to Margam pass through, I then spent a final hour or so picking off a decreasing amount of winners, a result of the valley line workings seen departing earlier in the day now returning. Most winners were 43s or 158s, but I also got the bonus of 170109 to take the XC 170s down to three.

By now it was 1430, and it was thus time to hop aboard 158960, which was pretty lightly loaded, and head into uncharted territory at Bristol Temple Meads.

bf13970030414c2ee8f3b6876747ab06.png

En-route the sun finally won the war with the Welsh clouds and it was a lovely journey back through Newport towards the Severn Tunnel. Another bonus 66, with 66021 heading out of Llanwern Steel works, was also pilfered. Patchway provided 158955, and after having to put up with two gobby businessmen from Filton Abbey Wood we eventually arrived at Temple Meads bang on time. First impressions were of a wonderfully quaint old station, enhanced in terms of charm by the fact it was situated on a curve. Again I had a wander round to see how it all worked, before settling at the Bath Spa end of platforms 5/7, again thanks to Tech for the advice on this! I will be honest; I was expecting it to be far busier than it actually was. In my mind peak-time at any major city station should be heaving with services, but perhaps I’m ‘spoilt’ with the likes of Piccadilly. Nonetheless I settled in, travel mug freshly refilled, and set about picking off what winners presented themselves.

158763 was in the bay on platform 2 for the entirety of my stay, with the first working winner being 150128. The SWT working to Salisbury was winner 159104, and another Brucey bonus on the freight side of things arrived after an hour, with 70802 stopping on the through lines for a driver change before continuing its journey on 6C36 from Moorswater to Aberthaw.

150002 showed up again at 1730, and promptly sat down at platform 7 for a good 15 minutes until a fitter came along and kicked it a bit, whilst I also saw the driver of 43088 having a cheeky cigarette out of the offside cab door before he set off to Paddington! Another XC bonus by way of 43301 broke a long dud streak as it arrived at the back of 1E67 from Plymouth to Leeds, so I am now just missing 43366 of the XC 43s.

ffa5d37e198e7fc38b1b04f02e40a22c.png

And with that 1900 arrived, thankfully, as I was getting very cold! Indeed 221130 was positively inviting, so I must have been freezing. The journey home was largely uneventful, and I took the opportunity to update trainlogger and begin formulating my London plans for a few weeks time. I did catch 43172 at Bristol Parkway, and 150101 at Cheltenham, but that was pretty much it until New Street, where a 5 minute wait was just long enough for me to take advantage of more gen to grab 170110, and as such leave me with just the two XC 170s to find. I fell asleep then, waking just as we rounded the curve at Cheadle Hulme in readiness for an early arrival into Stockport.

All in all, 115 winners, the best single day for some time. Cardiff was excellent, Bristol less so, but I reckon if I’d done them the other way round it might have been a role-reversal. In hindsight I could probably have cut the Bristol leg short at 1800ish and attacked New Street for an hour or so instead, but all told I’m very happy with the end result. It leaves me needing 22 ATW units, mainly 150s and 158s, and 150(!) GWR units. Hopefully I'll get a few more of them in London in a few weeks.

Next up is Scotland a week on Friday, where I’m targeting at least 150 winners, if not more. A bold target, but I reckon I might get there or thereabouts. It’ll be Hyndland from 1700 until 2000ish, then Queen Street until bedtime, whilst the Saturday will be Central for a few hours first thing before heading across to Edinburgh until that dries up.

Wow that was an incredible haul! Sorry to hear Bristol let you down, but looks like you did well altogether. A pair of 156s on the EMT run to Liverpool? That is a rare occurance, never seen that happening myself!

Aye you won't have seen anything at Hereford at the time of your visit, as you're not far behind the 175 you'd have got off (which would have been very busy from Ludlow and Leominster with the school and college kids as far as Hereford), the LM leaves about 7 minutes before you would have got there and the next northbound leaves at 0908 so you'd have seen that race past you about 5 minutes after leaving Hereford. If you found your journey went relatively slowly after about 0910 it's because you'd have caught up with the 0630 Piccadilly to Milford Haven so it's basically a case of go slow to avoid stopping and starting too much.

Glad my advice came in handy, I hope me and Kite have it right for you in Glasgow!

That apple and cinnamon tea sounds funky it has to be said!

You will probably easily make 150 winners in Scotland, don't forget to pop down to the Glasgow Subway (a good 30 minutes will see all the sets out), and Edinburgh trams ;)

A very productive day in Cardiff & Bristol

You get the odd 156+158 combo, but this is the first time I've ever seen it by 2x156. To carry on the theme of strange combinations I caught sight of a 150+158 working vice a 175 on a Piccadilly-Holyhead this morning, which I wouldn't fancy catching in this cold!

The apple and cinnamon tea is excellent at crushing any cravings for a sweet treat, but you have to consume them sparingly otherwise your mouth ends up drier than the Sahara!

Thank you, Kite. I may tentatively up the target to nearer the 200 mark if I get out of the traps well on Friday, but we shall see.

I'm hoping I might also get a glimpse on the way up of 88002 on Kingsmoor depot after its delivery this week *crosses fingers*

A very productive trip there! A shame that Bristol wasn't as good as you expected, but you still got quite a few units in the book!

Looks like a fun do, you were lucky with the seagull.
I was once hit on the top of my head by a pigeon in Waterloo station.
Luckily I was wearing a hat but the memory of me continually retching at the smell as I washed my coat and hat in the sink of the toilets at Waterloo East will stay with me forever.
Oh and many happy returns!

Great Scot! – 3/2/17 to 5/2/17

After cramming 40 hours at work, meeting one of the bridesmaids to do ‘Mr & Mrs’ and baking a cake for the wife to be's hen do all in to four days I was mightily relieved to spend most of Friday sat down, even if the first 20 minutes were aboard 150149 as it coughed and spluttered its way from Hazel Grove to Piccadilly. I alighted to a chilly platform 14 (though by no means the worst it’s ever been!) and had a short 13 minute fester before 1313 came round and 185140 rolled in to take me, and a huge number of others, on my maiden voyage to Glasgow. No reservation until Wigan (I used my GM Traincard between there and Manchester to save a few quid) meant I was stood in the vestibule of coach B as 150231 passed us on the Llandudno-Piccadilly turn, but once Wigan arrived almost everybody else got off and I could take my seat in B52, opposite a charming young Spanish couple watching Cars on their laptop. Top film.

Travel mug on the go (sweet ginger tea, since you asked) nothing really happened until well after Lancaster, at which point 68023 passed us on its way down to Basford Hall as 6K05. We literally shook, rattled and rolled our way up the WCML as Carnforth came and went, sadly the WCRC depot only had 37214 visible amongst a heap of carriages, and then things opened up to allow the half-light of the day to cast a fairly gloomy picture of the North Lakes. I vaguely remember traveling up this way en-route to Edinburgh for the Fringe festival many moons ago, but recall very little of the journey or the scenery. We hit Shap, passing 66304 as we went, but apart from a few 390s screaming passed nothing really set the pulse racing. A couple of WW2 bombers (I think) did fly over as we approached Tebay, which was a treat, but I have no idea why or where from/to. We eventually slowed for Carlisle, again nothing doing, despite my hopes of bagging the first Scotrail unit here, but as we crawled out the other side there was a veritable feast of winners on Kingmoor depot, with a good mix of locos and some bonus DBSOs. Sadly the new 88 wasn’t visible, but I figured it might be let out on Sunday when I came back passed.

9ea61da5323601903facd6c90d1e924c.png

We weren’t up to a much greater speed as Carlisle New Yard came in to view which allowed time for the eyes to lock on to 66110, as well as a couple of further DBCargo duds, including 66194 about to set off on the mammoth journey down to Margam as 6V71.

As the gloom deepened further we finally reached Motherwell, which will go down in the history books as the proud location of my first Scotrail winner, 318252. This woke me from my semi-slumber, as I was now on ‘everything is a winner’ territory, but it wasn’t until the approach to Glasgow Central where the next winners arrived, 314204 and 314206. An on-time arrival was novel, and I alighted to a pretty sparse station. Aside from us there was a dud 390 and 380021 in the platforms, nowt else, so I decided to head straight to the hotel over near Charing Cross, dump my bag, refill the travel mug (apple and cinnamon this time), and head down to Hyndland. 334002+334022 did the honours for my first ever journey aboard a Scotrail service, and a chance to sample the wonderful Glaswegian accents; which I must say I’m rather fond of! It makes no apologies for being almost indecipherable at times, but these a strange warmth to it, particularly on the ladies ;)

Hyndland arrived, which appeared to be in the middle of a housing estate. I was starving by this point, but the locals informed me the nearest shop was miles away, so I quickly knocked that idea on the head and settled down at the city end to begin ticking off the 318s, 320s and 334s. Winners rained down for a good hour before the rain itself began to fall, so I moved under the shelter near the ticket office to whittle requirements down a bit further. The observation I made here was that, whilst the service frequency was surprisingly high, the loadings were not, even though I was there from 1715 until 1900. Not sure if this is because I was comparing it unfairly to Manchester traffic volumes, or if it was quiet as it was Friday. By 1853 I was cold and hungry, the winners had pretty much ceased as well, so it was aboard 318259 for the quiet journey to Queen Street low level.

597230841282358e06cc6dc78f49e516.png

Up on to the main concourse, via Sainsburys for some mango slices, I was initially rebuffed in my attempts to get a platform ticket, but when I fed them a line about doing masters research on Scottish transport provision they seemed happy to then let me through. As you’d expect for a Friday night service levels were starting to drop off, but I still got 16 new sightings in the book, including 158731 which I took on an impromptu trip out to Bishopbriggs to get warm again (tea all gone by this point) as well as see if anything was having a night off on the depot. Sadly there was nothing, but I did manage a +1 connection back aboard 170396 to ensure I avoided a 30 minute fester. With that I wandered back to the hotel and, having set a 0700 alarm, bedded down for the night in what was a surprisingly comfy Premier Inn offering!

Day 2 arrived and, after a quick shower, it was straight off to Glasgow Central to see what it could offer me by way of winners. Far easier to get a platform ticket here, and I promptly plonked myself at the end of platforms 9/10 to make the most of the early morning sunshine, and then watched the winners roll in. A good mix of 156s, 314s, 320s and 380s, the latter looked very impressive and, being Desiros, came complete with spaceship sound effects to boot. The sleeper was departing for Polmadie as I settled in, with dud 92014 at the rear and 86401 leading. I stayed for a couple of hours, before looking at how best to get to Edinburgh before the rugby masses clogged all the trains up.

In the end I decided upon travelling from Queen Street, which was much quicker. Going via Starbucks for some porridge and a travel mug fill up (earl grey today!) I arrived just in time to hop onto 170431, which formed the very well loaded 0930. So well loaded was it that I could only get a fold-down vestibule seat, and had the refreshments trolley lady with me for the entirety of the trip as she couldn't even begin to get down the aisle. It didn’t stop me picking up 66432 in the sidings just outside Lenzie, but everything else was a blur really. As we approached Haymarket Murrayfield was already looking busy with supporters and it was no real surprise to see many a kilt and Guinness hat get off with me as we arrived. Whilst they headed up to the exits I went straight for the waiting room at the Waverley end of platforms 2/3, settled in and began picking off the winners once more. Again a good mix of units from across the entire fleet, but sadly none of the 43s working through on VTEC services were of any use. 2 hours flew by, a short interval at Pumpkin for more free earl grey and a blueberry muffin followed, and then after a further 30 minutes, and with the vast majority of rugby traffic now cleared, I headed across to Waverley for the services that terminated there before reaching Haymarket. 380006 did the honours.

Arriving at Waverley memories came flooding back of just how confusing the platform numbering is there. I knew most of the winners would come in on 1-4 but in the end I figured it was probably just as easy to stroll around in a clockwise direction, taking in as much as I could. There is probably a more efficient way of doing Waverley, but I fancied the exercise, it's a lovely plac to wander round and admire architecturally, and I don’t think I missed anything vital. I did stop for a bagel, which was rubbish, but that aside I spent a good hour or so just ambling really, picking up a number of further Scotrail winners, along with the bonus of 91113, which leaves me with just one 91 to get now!

170471 was my chosen steed back to Queen Street, and was very lightly loaded, allowing for a bay of four all to myself. The scenery was most pleasant as we rolled along, further increasing my wish to eventually end up living in the Highlands, looking after all manner of dogs and not seeing anybody but the wife for days on end. Would be bliss. A quick sweep of the platforms surprisingly threw up nothing new, so I pondered what to do next, and decided some further time at Central might be worthwhile. Heading via Buchanan Street for a bit of retail therapy I arrived to a dank, increasingly cold station, and if truth be told had to grit my teeth a bit to make it through the hour that followed and the handful of winners that came in.

By now it was getting on for 1700 and, having been out since 0730, I was flagging. I resolved to stay out for a couple more hours -after all I wouldn’t be returning this far north for a while- so headed down to the low level platforms to pick up 318250 for a ride to Partick. Picking up 318268 at Anderstone along the way, I eventually arrived to be greeted by masses of mildly disgruntled Rangers fans heading home, so kept out of the way at the Glasgow end of the platform. Just two winners presented themselves, 318262 and 320317, but this was partly to be expected given the previous night’s successful raid on Hyndland. I called it quits there, taking the aforementioned 318 to Queen Street, where a quick sweep of the main platforms produced eleven winners(!).

With that I headed back to the hotel via Sainsburys, picking up a nice salad and a fresh roll, along with some bubble bath, and had a good soak whilst listening to Craig Charles on 6 music, as I tend to do most Saturdays to be honest!

No alarm was set for day three, mainly due to the fact that very little seemed to be running on Sunday morning out of anywhere. I eventually checked out at just after 0900, but with my booked train home not until 1155 I had a couple of hours or so to kill. I wandered back towards Queen Street for one final time, seemingly the only person up and about at that time on a Sunday, and arrived to find nothing coming or going for 30 minutes. With little point staying to stare at an empty station I headed towards Central instead, took a seat in a coffee shop and consumed a lukewarm hot chocolate (which I sent back to be warmed up twice!) and some porridge, read my book for a bit, and then popped over the road into the station.

A very sparse station greeted me, just a few 156s and a 314 (all dud) were present, but knowing my 390 was coming ECS from Polmadie into platform 9 I went through the barriers and strolled down to the end of the platform to see if anything would turn up. The 380s were absent all day due to engineering work, but I did manage to pick up 156457, 314205/216 and 320302, my final Scotrail sightings for the trip.

Sure enough 390044 arrived 25 minutes early and, with a faster Euston service 18 minutes before ours that doesn’t go via Birmingham, I ended up with almost an entire coach to myself, taking my favourite spot in a priority seating table of four on the right-hand side. Tea (lemon and ginger today) on the go as we pulled away I was almost caught out by 66702 just outside Uddingston, working a load of ballast from Mossenden to Shields Junction on 6K06, but after that I just sat back and enjoyed the stunning view. The hills were topped with a wonderful sprawl of cloud, snow arrived around Lockerbie which only enhanced things further as we sped along, and the beautiful blend of rolling hills, meandering streams, and green pastures was simply breathtaking.

First stop Carlisle and as we slowed passed Carlisle New Yard I picked up 60076 enjoying a day off, before Kingmoor depot arrived again. Most of the DRS fleet also appeared to be enjoying a lazy Sunday, with an array of 66s and 68s parked up, as well as the mighty fine looking 88002. I had to double-take to realise it was the new bi-mode, as it looked remarkably like the 68s parked either side, but it was indeed the latest arrival, which was a right bonus. After that there was nothing of note, a few tampers trundling up and down, but Wigan soon arrived, which was my cue to alight. From here it was 350407+410 to Piccadilly, during which time a young lad got stun for a full Edinburgh-Piccaddilly fare as his railcard had expired, and finally 156420 back to Hazel Grove.

All in all, a very good trip was had. Glasgow was absolutely lovely (Central station was fantastic in terms of aesthetics), and I will undoubtedly return for non-spotting purposes soon enough. In terms of winners, I ended up with 229 spread over the three days, including 206 Scotrail units. This has seen the percentage completion jump from zero to 69 in one go, and leave me with 92 units to get. Most of these are 158s really, and as such I might leave it a while before returning in the hope the pool gets a good mix round and those I’m missing come down from the highlands to more easily accessible climes.

Next up is the London mega-spot which commences in almost exactly seven days’ time. I’m still ironing out exactly where to go when during the three days, but planning is in the final stages, and I’m very, very much looking forward to it.

Hotel near Charing Cross, brings back memories of my first time in Glasgow with a few days based in the Charing Cross Guest House.

Anyhow sounded like a very good book filling mission in Scotland, ouch to that young lad having to fork out for the Edinburgh - Manchester fare.

*Grumbles at you having one of my last 3 150s to Manchester* ;)

Wow that was a mighty fine haul!

Like Kite, I noticed you had a Northern DMU very much in my sights, 156420 which is one of my last two Allerton 156s to get for haulage! Only train on your trip I'd have scored for haulage by the looks of it, with possible exception to 158731.

Just like that, I want to get back up to Glasgow asap! Not sure if you've been up the West Highland Line yet, but you'll love it. In my opinion it's the most beautiful part of the UK, with the Kyle of Lochalsh to Inverness line an ultra close second.

As always, a top read but I'd have been subbing those teaa for coffee ;)

I felt sorry for him in a way, but then it transpired his card expired two years ago so he couldn't really plead ignorance.

Can I suggest a short leap when you do get 150149? The old girl is not in the best of health at present and takes it out on those she carries!

156420 is in far better knick than Kite's 150, that's for sure.

I've always wanted to explore the Hinglands by rail, the missus would probably enjoy that as well so I definately have it on the list of things to do. Possibly when we get a dog we can make a proper holiday of it.

I remember drinking so much coffee during college years that I end up having heart palpitations, so I've knocked that on the head these days. Tea is the way forward!

Fair enough on the health situation and coffee!

If you don't enjoy the West Highlands I will be shocked if I'm honest. Probably best to aim for the sleeper though to get there to arrive in some sort of style, and it's an awesome way to wake up!

London Mega Spot - Day 1 (15/2/17

Right then, off we go! A note that, to keep the length of this respectable, sighting logs at certain locations are hyperlinked. Rest assured all hyperlinks are to screenshots only, nothing else!

With the missus kindly taking me to Disley for the 0627 it was all aboard 150274 first up for the familiar journey down to Stockport. I alighted here, with the good lady staying on into Piccadilly to do an early day’s work. With 15 or so minutes at Stockport I took the opportunity to get the travel mug filled up for the first time on the trip (lemon and ginger to wake me up!) courtesy of Starbucks, then waited for 390013 to pull in a couple late for the first trip down to London in a while. Busy service, people drawn to it by the fact it runs express to Euston, but thankfully my allocated seat was a window one in a bay of four, with just a lady opposite for company. Nothing to get the pulse racing really on the way down, indeed after a pleasant chat with the aforementioned lady I stuck the Guardian football podcast on which passed the time until Watford. Freight en-route was sparse:

  • 92044 6S94 Dollands Moor–Carlisle N.Y
  • 66525 4O14 Garston-Southampton
  • 66590 4L41 Basford Hall-Felixstowe

Wembley sidings were rather quiet, but happily one of the three locos there was required 66102, the first winner of the trip. As Euston approached I also noted 350261 on its way up to Northampton (thanks to the TOPS thread for the heads up on this one).

From here it was down to the Northern line for the short journey to Charing Cross for my meeting. I’d allowed plenty of time for this, reckoning upon the usual rush hour traffic, but the tube was eerily quiet, and I was out into the gloomy London air with 25 minutes to kill. I thus went for a quick sweep of the Charing Cross heavy rail platforms, scoring the first Southeastern winners of the trip.

With that it was into the office, not to reappear until 1545.

Once I did reappear it was back onto the Northern line, changing at Tottenham Court Road for a long but pleasant walk to the Central line through the refurbished part of the station, which I’d yet to experience. From here it was up to Stratford and, after a brief bit of confusion as to what platform I needed, it was aboard 315822+315823 for the cramped run up to Ilford.

The hotel (a decent Travelodge all told, recommended) was a couple of minutes away, and after changing out of the work attire it was back to Ilford for the above 315s to take me back to Stratford, where I alighted to fight my way through the shoppers and into Stratford International for some Eurostar and Javelin action. The nature of the station means the darkness descended very quickly, which in turn made it very cold all of a sudden. Nonetheless I made decent headway here over the next hour or so. I’d been forewarned that the 373/4s passed through at a fair old lick but, one St Pancras-Lille working aside the rest actually crawled through fairly slowly, which was handy. The end result was ten 395s, a couple of 373s and four 374s.

Hungry and a wee bit cold, it was time to head back through Westfield, stopping for a frankly average Greek wrap thing on the way, and to platforms 9/10 to set up camp for the remainder of the evening. Plenty of comings and goings here, with my chosen spot allowing for easy identification of everything bar the TfL Rail services via platform 5. No issue though, as they were back through on platform 8 15 minutes or so later. The 90s rattling through caught me off guard initially, but I soon got into the swing of things. Highlight was getting the final GA 360, 360117 chalked off towards the end of the night.

There was also a plethora of freight through platforms 10/10a, which had a couple of winners in the mix for good measure, as well as 92033 in its sleeper livery doing some proper graft on the car carriers:

  • 59005 6L21 Whatley Quarry-Dagenham
  • 66558 4L10 London Gateway-Coatbridge
  • 90043 4L90 Basford Hall-Felixstowe
  • 66593 4S88 Felixstowe-Coatbridge
  • 66762 4L18 Trafford Park-Felixstowe
  • 66764 4M02 Felixstowe-Hams Hall
  • 66121 4L40 Morris Cowley-Purfleet
  • 66548 4M89 Felixstowe-Ditton
  • 66514+516 4M92 Felixstowe-Lawley Street
  • 66006 6V31 Dagenham Dock-Didcot
  • 66182 4L56 Trafford Park-London Gateway
  • 66104 4L10 Birch Coppice-London Gateway
  • 66532 4M37 London Gateway-Garston
  • 92033 6L48 Garston-Dagenham
  • 66556 4L73 Lawley Street-Felixstowe

By this point it was 2245 so, in anticipation of a big day to come, it was onto 315824 and back to the hotel.

London Mega Spot - Day 2 (16/2/17)

Up at 0630 and out for the 0703 from Ilford it as again an interchange at Stratford, heading onto the Central line for the run to Oxford Circus before northwards on the Bakerloo to Marleybone. Regents Park brought back memories of the daily commute! Onto the main concourse at Marleybone first stop was Boots for some hair wax (I’d left mine at home) and, after a bit of preening(!) I was onto the mainline platforms to see what Chiltern had to offer. Straight into the winners enclosure went 68002 & 68018, top and tailing the slam door stock, with the DVT also present. I believe this was due to the fact they do not have the required mods to operate with the slam doors?

After that it was basically 165s all the way, save for a few 168s later on. A young lad, who I assume had got dressed in the dark he was that shabby, was eagerly snapping away at one of the 68s, which sadly alerted a rather over-zealous security guard who asked me ‘what my intentions were.’ Sadly my explanation that I just wanted to watch some trains wasn’t the answer he was looking for, and I was asked to leave. I contemplate kicking up a fuss, but decided with other spots to hit to just leave him be.

Bakerloo line to Paddington next up, where the usual platform sweep was undertaken to score 43177 and 180108, as well as 387135+137, my ride out to Ealing Broadway. Still smelling new, the pair were very impressive, until I sat down. Good lord the seats are dreadful. I pity anybody making any kind of prolonged journey on them! As we headed out towards Ealing I noted 66759 taking its turn as the Crossrail donkey, 387141 on North Pole, and 59101 at Acton Yard, but sadly still no 800s, all undertaking testing elsewhere. As Ealing Broadway approached I had a sudden change of heart and, despite the crap seats, stayed onboard until Southall instead, hoping for some required WCR stock. The gamble paid off as both 37516 and 47237 were busy readying themselves for action. Southall itself was decent enough in terms of sightlines for the 43s roaring through, but the undoubted highlight here was 360201 pulling in, which cleared both the class and Heathrow Connect in the process.

Freight was confined to 66150 working 6L56 Didcot-Dagenham, as well as 66730 on 6V56 Wellingborough-Whatley.

After 90 minutes I was in need of a wee, so hopped aboard 360202, alighting at Ealing Broadway for said PNB, followed by some porridge and a hot chocolate. After that I took up residence in the shelter on platform 3 to take a few more numbers down. Sadly my work at Southall meant there was very little on the slows that required my attention, with only the 43s approaching from the west of any real use. A good bit of freight kept things interesting:

  • 59206+203 7A09 Merehead-Acton
  • 66102 4B38 Acton-Moreton
  • 66588 4L31 Bristol-Felixstowe
  • 66719 6Z59 Calvert-Cricklewood
  • 66613 6M91 Theale-Hope
  • 66092 6Z85 Hayes Tarmac-Acton

Clapham Junction was next on the agenda, so it was onto the Central line, before changing at Shepherds Bush for 378214 to the Junction, picking up 59205 waiting for us to cross at Latchmere Junction as it worked 6V18 from Allington to Whatley. Clapham arrived, but I wasn’t for hanging around, as instead I was off to Streatham Common to have a look around my old home suburb. 377603 did the honours for the journey, whilst the journey also threw up 377438 and 377471 (Wandsworth Common), 377310, 377618, 377701 and 387201 (Balham), and 377328 (Streatham Common). Exiting the station the memories came flooding back (to be fair, I’ve only been gone 2 years), and I hopped aboard the 60 to Streatham itself, before wandering leisurely up Stretham High Road, snapping away at things of interest, including my old house. Very little has changed, but it was nice to see the old stomping ground again.

It was getting on for 1400 by now, and I wanted to get a decent stint in at Clapham, so it was into Streatham Hill and a short wait for 377107+315 back down to the hubbub of ‘Britain’s busiest station.’ Once there it was straight over to the London end of platforms 9/10, which served me well last time I was there, and allowed for pretty decent views across most lines. It’s obviously too busy to get everything that passes through, but I figured most of the Southern units would come back around a number if times, so I mainly focused on the SWT workings, particularly the long distance stuff which I’d only get one crack at in some cases. What followed was manic, with the red pen taking a right hammering for over three hours. The highlight was getting four of the new 707s in the book. 004+006 were first up, heading out of the yard for a quick wash, before heading back in again. 003+005 arrived 90 minutes or so later having been undertaking testing between London and Reading. All looked very impressive, but as with the 387s earlier the seats look suspiciously like ironing boards! Speaking of 387s, one of my final winners at Clapham was the pairing of 387142+145 on a mammoth test run from Bletchley to Brighton and back. Freight was more sparse, understandably, but I did get 66051 on 6V00 Newhaven-Acton, and 66847 on Hoo-Eastleigh.

1800 was now fast approaching, so I reckoned it'd be a good time to go 'against the flow' and head into Waterloo aboard 5910. From here it was the Jubilee to West Ham, followed by the hop up to Barking aboard 357023+044 for some c2c action, mixed with more freight. Having never been to Barking before it took a while to work out the best vantage point, but eventually settled upon platforms 5/6. It did mean risking getting bowled by the S7s, but they don’t hang around for long each time so I was pretty safe. A good 90 minutes here produced a surprisingly high number of winners, particularly in light of the number I’d snaffled when in London in June, but hey, not complaining! Freight was just the following trio on working similar to the previous night at Stratford:

  • 66599 4S83 London Gateway-Coatbridge
  • 59005 6L21 Whatley-Dagenham Dock
  • 66120 4L40 Cowley-Purfleet

Rather interestingly, and with little publicity or fanfare, it was announced at around 2000 that, due to engineering work between Fenchurch Street and Barking, all services were now diverting to/from Liverpool Street for the remainder of the evening. Much consternation followed amongst a number of those on the platform, but it offered me a much quicker route home, so I was more than happy to hop aboard 357039+015 at 2024 and then get 315836 back to Ilford.

London Mega Spot - Day 3 (17/2/17)

The last full day in London, so it was up and out for 0707, and the non-stop run to Stratford on board 315853. 321320 was added to the book as we pulled away. At Stratford it was the long walk across to the Overground platforms and a cosy 378201, which took me to Highbury & Islington. Here it was a tossup between tube or 313, but with 8 minutes until the latter I opted for the tube and a quick hop up to Finsbury Park. I was intending to set up camp here for a few hours, but half the place is a building sight, so I made a snap decision to head out to the more tranquil surroundings of Hornsey again, ala June. Good decision all told as it got me a whole heap of stuff on the depot (indeed a surprisingly large amount given it was morning peak!), as well as a good number of Great Northern winners. 66013 also showed its face, some three hours late, on 6L99 Peak Forest-Ripple Lane, and 37027 was present throughout at Ferme Sidings with a NR test train. No VTEC or Grand Central winners during the two hours I was there, so I fired off some requests to the TOPS thread, before heading back to Finsbury Park aboard 313061. Here I had 5 minutes or so before 387101 took me to Kings Cross, just long enough to get 387104 in the log, along with the last VTEC DVT, 82231.

The Cross soon arrived, I got 67021 in the sidings, which I think had worked the previous night’s sleeper, as well as 90034, the latest hired-in 90 for VTEC. Speaking of hired-in locos, I also spied the latest EMT 43s giving VTEC a hand, namely 43044 & 43082. No time to hand around however, it was across to St Pancras, undertaking the usual sweep of the Eurostar platforms to get 3008, 3202, 3211 & 3214, before heading down to the Thameslink platforms for the clinical smelling 700018, my maiden journey aboard a 700. Very impressive all told, with the PIS offering all manner of useful information and a smooth ride. Again I would question the seats if undertaking a journey much beyond, say, St Albans, but I think that’s a given on new units these days.

Once at West Hampstead Thameslink I made the north end of platforms 2/3 home for a while, picking off a good variety of 43s, 222s, 319s, 377s and 700s. Indeed I am now down to just the one remaining 222 and four of the EMT 43s. There was a glorious moment when 43076+082 roared through platform 3, the noise and smell was fantastic. Pretty busy freight-wise as well:

  • 66013 6M22 Cricklewood-Calvert
  • 66143 6Z81 Angerstein-Churchyard Tarmac
  • 66145 6F93 Churchyard Tarmac-Toton
  • 66719 6Z59 Calvert-Cricklewood

Just before midday I got word of four requirements heading towards Kings Cross for the afternoon, so made a rough plan to head back down into the city fairly soon afterwards aboard 700106. It was quickly up to Kings Cross to capture 43465 (leaving one GC 43 to find), before 43300 arrived shortly afterwards. With that it was back to West Hampstead for another hour or so, 319007 doing the conveying this time. A few more winners added, although by now the duds were appearing with more regularity, and when 1431 came it was time to bid a final farewell to the MML, once more back to Kings Cross thanks to 700108 this time. Again I was hunting VTEC locos, with 43238 and 91127 added to the day’s growing list of winners. The latter is particularly significant, as it means the 91s are now cleared for sight.

From Kings Cross it was a straightforward move down to London Bridge next, via a sparsely populated Northern line.

After trekking for what I can only assume was 5 miles up through the building works to the new lower concourse (which was very impressive, I must say), I had to try and work out where would be best to start my assault on Southeastern units. I initially plumped for the platform 8/9 island, but that proved a little difficult in terms of sight lines for those workings that ran non-stop through platforms 5/6, so I instead swiftly moved across to the adjacent island, platform 6/7, which was far better. I settled in then for a good couple of hours, initially focusing upon everything going in and out, no mean feat, before then switching to just the inbound services after 30 minutes or so. The results were fantastic, as you’d expect from a ToC I’d previously only seen 10 units from. I probably missed a couple of 466s sandwiched in the middle of some formations as well.

I was planning on staying for another hour or so when I saw 442406 pull in on the Southern platforms. Now avid readers will know I’m not in this for the bashing, just the spotting, but given the impending completion of the withdrawal of the 442s, and having never been on a unit which divides opinion around these here parts, I thought it rude not to go for my one and only spin aboard one. As I wandered towards the front and took my seat I also picked up a few further Southern requirements, taking London Bridge’s winners list to a very healthy number.

First stop (and my stop) was East Croydon (I got 455810 at New Cross, and 171401 on Selhurst depot along the way), where it was a quick PNB, before boarding 455806+807 for my next destination, London Victoria. Along the way I reflected upon the brief yet pleasant 442 journey, and began planning what remained of my time in the capital. Balham threw up 455812 as we went the opposite way to the masses and into the capital. Victoria arrived, and I made my way across to the Southeastern platforms to pick off the units that were avoiding London Bridge for the evening. A couple of excellent pretzels were devoured whilst I watched the comings and goings, and I made use of the 7 or so minutes 465014 was in town to get a free wee in, instead of having to shell out 50p for the station facilities. If that isn’t living up to the ‘tight Northerner’ stereotype then I don’t know what is! By 2000 I was getting restless, and decided that, after a long day, it was time to begin meandering back to Ilford.

First move in this regard was 377159+318 to Clapham, where I arrived just in time to head over to platform 5 and catch 37219+255 either end of a NR test train bound for Woking as 1Q56. I also caught 59203 on 7V67 Purley to Acton, but nothing else of note before I clambered aboard 5742+5907 for the short blast to Waterloo. Surprisingly a sweep of the units at the London end was most productive as I walked towards the underground, with 444029, 450082 and 450555 all safely in the book, which was a bonus. I was briefly tempted by Marylebone again, but quickly dismissed this in favour of a nice sit down on the Jubilee line all the way to Stratford.

Once back at the station I seemed to have spent half the trip at, the initial plan was to head straight for the hotel, but having checked RTT there were a few nice looking freight workings due through and, with a late start tomorrow, I reasoned I might as well hang around. I got a few more Great Anglia units ticked off in and around the freight, mainly 321s, as well as two more 315s, but eventually they dried up to leave me to observe the locos coming and going through 10/10a:

  • 66619 6M97 Thurrock-Tunstead (I occasionally see this up near home if I’m out very early doors on a Saturday!)
  • 66105 6V31 Dagenham-Didcot
  • 66182 4L56 Trafford Park-London Gatewa (Often seen at Deansgate of a lunchtime!)
  • 66597 6Z75 Brentwood-Whitemoor
  • 66769 5Z43 Tonbridge-Ilford (Dragging an Arlington Fleet mobile wheel lathe or some such)
  • 66599 4M37 London Gateway-Garston
  • 92033 6L48 Garston-Dagenham

With 92033’s passing I boarded 315836 for Ilford, and the end of day 3!

London Mega Spot - Day 4 (17/2/17)

With no real plan in place it was a comparatively late start on the final day as I check out at about 0820, having to wait a couple of minutes whilst a guy tried to locate his brother-in-law who’d failed to return following some drunken escapades the previous night. He eventually found him sleeping in the entrance to the post office depot opposite the hotel!

With Tfl Rail suspended for the weekend due to Crossrail works it was instead onto the 169 bus to Barking, and 357032 to West Ham. I hung around here for 30 minutes or so, scoring nothing, before rather randomly deciding I fancied sampling the offerings at East Croydon. Jubilee line to London Bridge again, with an even longer walk to the new concourse than yesterday, and after a peppermint tea and porridge I did a sweep of the platforms before boarding 455804 for the run to Croydon, done via the new dive-under at Bermondsey, which was a minor source of excitement. A number of winners en-route; 378142 at New Cross Gate, 455833 at Brockley, 378146 at Forest Hill, 378145 at Penge West, and 171721/722/723 shunting around on Selhurst.

Once at East Croydon I settled in my usual spot at the London end of platforms 3/4 and observed the comings and goings. There were a number of chaps taking pictures of the 700s, often rather precariously (and irresponsibly) balanced towards the edge of the platform as the new units arrived each time. I would say I’m surprised, but if I’ve learnt anything since starting my quest it’s that some ‘enthusiasts’ are utter morons. After a good couple of hours it was sadly time to depart, and so 377125+401 were chosen for the non-stop run back to London Bridge. Northern line taken to Euston, I emerged with 35 minutes before 390033 was due to take me home. Swinging via Marks for a nice chicken salad, some delightful garlic and coriander naan crisp things, and a bag of chocolate peanuts I was still a good 25 minutes early. Still, I ambled down the ramp to platform 4 with not a staff member in sight, so boarded coach F and bagged a table of four on the right hand side, stuck on the latest Guardian football podcast and settled in. Indeed I actually had to check we hadn’t accidentally departed overly early when we pulled away with only me and two others in the carriage, but it was bang on 1340, so off we went for a first stop of Crewe.

A few bits and pieces of interest as we made our way out of the capital, with a plethora of duds on Wembley joined by 92011 ‘Handel.’ The naan crisp things had long gone by the time Milton Keyenes approached, but I had my wits about me long enough to grab 350114 heading the opposite way. Just two 350s to go! The WCML was pretty quiet, even for a Saturday, and save for a dud 70 I saw nothing until Crewe, where Basford Hall was filling nicely ahead of engineering duties on Sunday. Sadly none I saw were required, but I did get 66422 on Crewe carriage sidings. After that it was all about ensuring we made it to Piccadilly on time, as technically I only had 2 minutes to get across to platform 1 for my 142 home. Thankfully we ended up 2 early, allowing plenty of time for me to clamber wearily aboard 142065 and back to New Mills Central.

All in all, a stupendous few days. 847 new sightings, Heathrow Connect cleared, along with the 91s and 360s. A good mix of locations allowed a good number of ToCs to take a battering, and the freight winners were also surprisingly plentiful. It leaves the ‘London ToCs’ looking thus:

Abellio Greater Anglia - 148/247 - 60% (Not had a single DMU winner yet!)
c2c - 61/80 - 76%
Chiltern Railways - 55/81 - 68%
Gatwick Express (GTR) - 33/40 - 83%
Great Northern (GTR) - 128/138 - 93%
Great Western Railway - 180/294 - 61% (Got little of the Devon stuff)
Heathrow Connect - 5/5 - 100%
Heathrow Express - 13/14 - 93% (Damn you 332014!)
London Midland - 166/175 - 95%
London Overground - 68/96 - 71%
South West Trains - 283/400 - 71%
Southeastern Trains - 223/367 - 61%
Southern (GTR) - 227/293 - 77% (Got none of the 313s yet)
TfL Rail - 35/44 - 80%
Thameslink (GTR) - 93/127 - 73%

I do wish I’d got more GWR stuff, and spent some time at Bethnal Green for the 317s and 379s, but that can be done another time. Indeed I do hope to return in May/June for more action in the big smoke.

As a minor addition to the above I’ve since snaffled 158826 at Piccadilly, as well as 66601 on 6H51 Hardendale-Tunstead today whilst out on my run. I now need 36 Freightliner locos, and 19 ATW units.

Next few months will see trips limited as wedding preparation ramps up. I’ve a day off next Friday, so I might head out early doors down to Birmingham to see if I can get the last few LM and XC units in the bag, but I’m mindful I need to be back for 1700ish to go to the wedding venue (for reasons I cannot currently recall!). The other option is Leeds, but given both 155346 and 156479 are currently holidaying north of the border I might wait and get the last few units in one go.

Sounded like a very productive few days in London.

The 67 at Kings Cross would be the Thunderbird loco for VTEC, and regarding your move at Victoria toilets, the ones at the southern end of the station were free last week (as Network Rail has dropped the charges for the time being) ;)

Not worthy of a full trip report really, but today saw a mini-trip out to Stafford. I had hoped to get some required Brum units, but lacking the gen I didn't fancy standing around waiting blindly all day. Thus it was aboard 175113 at Stockport for an uneventful run to Crewe, save for the service then being diverted via Chester due to a fatality around Wem. 57309 and 57311 were on Thunderbird duties, rare to see two in one place. 350370 took me to Stafford, and I managed to get a line of Colas 56s on Basford Hall awaiting engineering duties in North Wales tomorrow; 56078, 56087, 56096, 56105, 56113 & 56302.

Stafford was dreary, but I was also greeted by 47749 in platform six, having stayed overnight after dragging the broken 350130 in the night before. Indeed the aforementioned 350 was there for the duration of my stay and was in the process of coupling to 350236 as I left.

That aside it was mainly freight:

  • 66005 0G22 Trafford Park-Bescot
  • 70015 4S44 Daventry-Coatbridge
  • 66158 6O42 Halewood-Southampton
  • 66181 6M48 Southampton-Halewood

I say mainly as, completely out of the blue, 350106 also arrived from Liverpool after an hour or so, which now just leaves me with 350262 to find of the 350s.

With that it was back to Crewe aboard 390050, and the massing ranks of Basford Hall, which threw up 66014, 66133, 66737 and my final Freightliner 70, 70013, which I've been chasing for over 6 months now. Crewe came, I boarded 323235 for a bit of spaceship action, and then it was the drive home.

To round off a short but sweet day I also copped 66060 on 6H60 Hope Street-Peak Forest, which was doing it's usual Saturday afternoon route-refresher diversion via New Mills Central.

Wow! That was an incredible haul around London! The lists at Clapham Junction and London Bridge reminded me of the days my books were really empty and the many hours I spent at both places.

You are doing quite amazingly it must be said, and an epic read throughout. I don't blame you avoiding the Victoria lavatory ching, I'd have done much the same. I must have some Yorkshire blood in me somewhere!

350170? I guess you meant either 107 or 370?

That should be 350130, can't read my own handwriting

Thanks, Tech. I think the pace will slow significantly now, and I certainly won't get numbers like this again I don't think, even if I hit London again. Shows how far I've come, but will make trips from this point onwards that little bit harder.

Yeah, there were two or three 332s on Old Oak when I went passed, sadly they were too far away to cop the numbers. Whilst I know one of them probably was 014 my rule is that unless I physically see the number then it doesn't count :(

3/3/17 - Bumbling round Brum

The plan today was to get what was left of the London Midland and Cross Country requirements, mainly a few 170s and a couple of 172s, as well as any of the Arriva Train Wales 150/158s that might be floating around.

As such it was to Disley for the 0719 down to Stockport, today utilising 156423 for the 18 or so minute journey. Once here I had a 15 minute fester before 390008 was due in, during which time I got the apple and cinnamon tea on the go, and watched as 66602 trundled through on 6F29 Ferrybridge - Fiddlers Ferry. The aforementioned 390 arrived 2 late but it was a routine blast across to Crewe for arrival back on time. Here I had half an hour or so before the West Midlands Day Ranger was valid, so wandered around to see if anything good was lurking. Sadly not, with dud 57309 today's resident Thunderbird, but there was the vaguely unusual sight of a 158 arriving on the Derby-Crewe service (this is apparently becoming more common during the peaks).

Eventually 221115 rumbled in bang on time, and I boarded to find a very fragrant vestibule. For once I mean this in a positive way as well! I managed to find a window seat, through which I spied both 66703 (4M21 Felixstowe-Trafford) and 68003 (6U76 Basford Hall-Mountsorrel) as we picked up speed upon departure, and then 66513 at Stafford working 4M45 Felixstowe-Ditton. After that there was nothing to do but sit back and wait for Wolverhampton, and a quick change onto 221140, which was far less fragrant than it's Virgin brother!

New Street arrived 1 early and, armed with gen courtesy of 37078xotTE, I ambled over to platform 7 to await 170516, which rolled in early to tick off the first winner of the day. From here it was over to platform 1 for the first ATW winner, courtesy of 158822. With the ball now rolling it was the familiar stroll through a sparse Bullring across to Moor Street to attack the remaining 172s.

Arriving to find a dud 68 (sadly I can't remember which one) I ambled over to platform 1 for the short wait before 172331 rolled in. The aforementioned gen noted a couple of requirements without an allocation, so I took a punt they might be on Tyseley and jumped aboard for the journey passed the depot. Sadly, whilst the depot was busy, nothing that was identifiable was required, so it was instead a short fester at a very wet Tyseley, during which the last remaining LM 172 passed through, namely 172217. This leaves me just three 172s to find, 102/103+104 of Chiltern fame. The return to Moor Street was upon 172342, where I stayed around long enough to get 165006 and 68015 before heading back through the shopping centre to the Bat Cave.

Once back in the gloom it was across to 10B for 170631, arriving from Hereford, then quickly over to 9A for 170637 before it departed for Stansted. To cap a frenetic 15 minutes it was a brisk march over to 5B to get 158834 in the book. Just 158818 to find of the ATW 158s now.

Sadly the remaining required XC 170 wasn't due back through New Street until early evening, so I was now at a loss for sources of potential winners. As such I decided to head back towards home, and spend a few hours at Stafford for my fix of all things freight. A quiet 221132 carried me back to my seemingly regular haunt, and the nice cosy waiting room on platforms 3/4. The rubbish weather meant the station was devoid of the usual pack of photographers, which allowed decent lines of sight for the following across the proceeding two and a bit hours:

  • 86612+637 4L90 Basford Hall-Felixstowe
  • 90024+018 4M25 Mossend-Daventry
  • 66113 6O42 Halewood-Southampton
  • 66549+560 0K24 Bescot-Bassford Hall
  • 90036+92036 0A06 Crewe IMD-Wembley
  • 66532 4M81 Felixstowe-Basford Hall
  • 56078+076+105 0Z56 Washwood-Basford Hall
  • 66561+570 0M46 Toton-Basford

A good variety of stuff, with a good few winners chucked in for good measure.

I made plans to head home via Crewe, with 350236 doing the honours for the first leg. A bonus of 66569 was picked up on the approach to Basford Hall, before I alighted and headed up over the footbridge to platform 5, doing well not to purchase a pie from the stall as I went. I was anticipating getting the Northern stopper back to Stockport, but struck lucky when the late-running 390115 pulled in. This was in the process of making an unscheduled stop at Stafford to allow an unwell passenger to be treated as I boarded my 350, so I hopped aboard and sped back to Stockport 20 minutes earlier than expected. This then allowed for a +2 onto 150117 for the run back to Disley.

Not a bad little trip out all told. I still need a 43 and a 170 to complete the XC roster, whilst LM still have a 153, 170, 319 and 350 running around that I need to snaffle. Pleased to have got the 172s done though, which means I'm unlikely to be visiting the charming Moor Street again in the near future.

I have previously reference that trips will be in short supply until May now, but I might see if I can get a cheeky one in in three weeks time, possibly doing an early start down to Tamworth/Nuneaton for early-morning freight, before heading back to New Street briefly if the above outstanding units are showing their faces.
