Palma to Soller Railway

If you are in Majorca and get the chance, take the old electric wooden train (100 years old) from Palma to Soller.

Lovely old train (old uni-direction tram seats-not the comfiest but better than a Pacer!) through the orange groves and mountains. Takes about an hour.

Soller is a lovely old town but take the old tram down to Port Soller. Again a very interesting ride (about ten mins).

Glad we found this gem of a day out . Highly recommended!

Yes this is a good line with some excellent views. The train I travelled on had a driving car which dated from the 1920s electrification but the rest of the coaches were fairly modern builds though were indeed wooden bodied. Interestingly the line was built to three foot gauge. The line opened on the same day that the Titanic went down I recall.

We stayed in Port Polenca. The bus ride from Port Soller to Port Polenca is a spectatular ride through the mountains and, we thought, better than the aforementioned train and tram.

If you look at the trams, they have the same drivers controls as the Class 08 Shunters.
The trip on the railway is worth the money.

A few years ago I traveled on the tram from Soller to Port Soller, and really enjoyed it. I'd also recommend the catamaran ride from Port Soller to the cove of Sa Calobra.

Interestingly enough, when on the tram, I noticed a road tunnel under construction with a sign next to it proclaiming that construction of this tunnel had been partially funded by the EU. One elderly British tourist on the tram said "Why can't the EU fund things like that over here?"

If you are pressed for time, or want to make a cheaper day out, take the 210 bus to Soller from Palma and the tram and train back (or vice-versa).
