BBC reports showed track being painted white, and the rationale is obvious as to why, along with the shots showing apparently specifically in the vicinity of points.

I'm curious please as to if this is a new practice, or, has been around for some time and is now being given prominence as a result of the heatwave and potential damage to track and infrastructure .

I remember the points at kings cross station were often painted white, although it’s been over a year since I was there so I’m not sure if they still are (after the layout changes).

Thanks for the informative replies. So in essence, nothing new, just a convenient news filler piece regarding the current heatwave.

On a recent trip to Italy, it was evident that a large proportion of RFI track was painted white.
Around, for instance, Verona and Bologna.
