Paddington

As we all know, Paddington has three sets of LUL platforms: one serving the Bakerloo line; one the H&C/Circle lines down to Hammersmith and eastbound beyond Edgeware Rd to Baker St, Kings Cross St P and Liverpool St; and the last on the District/Circle lines eastbound to just Edgware Rd and southbound to Notting Hill Gate and Earl's Cort/South Kensington.

Hoping that the above is right, are there any names for the different platforms/areas in which these platforms lie? I know Praed St is one, but I just need to know the rest to help with RailMiles.

Having had a look at RailMiles - the platforms on the District and Circle lines are the ones shown as Praed Street (Circle & District LUL) and the platforms adjacent to the mainline station are shown as H&C.

Paddington (Suburban) is the Hammersmith & City and now Circle platforms to/from Hammersmith. The Outer/Inner Rail [Circle] platforms are Paddington (Praed Street), and the junction between the two lines east of the station is...Praed Street Junction. I have always known the Bakerloo platforms as Paddington (Bakerloo), similar to Edgware Road (Bakerloo) vice Edgware Road (Circle).

The Bakerloo/District/Circle station at Paddington is also known as Paddington (City).

And the Hamm & City ones were originally Paddington (Bishop's Road). There also used to be four of them, with one roughly where Platform 14 is now. Generally, the northern two were used for Underground services, whilst the southern two were for the GWR goods trains heading into London, such as the meat traffic to Leadenhall Street.

I'm working in the control room for the Met/Circ/Ham lines atm - they call the Hammersmith one Paddington Sub and the District one Paddington Circ.

I haven't been to London since the Circle line was extended to Hammersmith.

When you arrived in the main line station, there used to be one set of Underground signs pointing to "Hammersmith & City" and another set pointing to "Bakerloo, Circle and District". How are the two stations distinguished now?

The mainline station wayfinding signs pointing towards P15/16 direction read:

Hammersmith & City Line
Circle Line via Kings Cross

Signs towards the original Circle station read:

Bakerloo, District and
Circle Line via Victoria

Thanks - perfectly sensible as far as it goes, but the signs don't mention the Circle line extension towards Hammersmith!

I think there might have been some justification in renaming one of the stations when the Circle line was extended. Having Circle line trains running through two stations, both called Paddington, must cause an element of confusion.

I thought about that too, but I suppose it doesn't really matter, because people aiming for Hammersmith will still be going to P15 anyway, and AIUI all trains through that platform will show Hammersmith on their destination blind anyway, whatever their origin was?
