I remember seeing that train at Ilfracombe one Saturday of that summer.

What is quite shocking - by current stands of stock utilisation - is that (if I'm reading the carriage working sheet correctly) the restaurant car was used only on that Saturday return working from Paddington to Ilfracombe; it's previous working is shown as the return from Ilfracombe the previous Saturday. I wonder if it was used at all for the rest of the year ?

If I recall it correctly, a Warship throughout. I don't know if the same loco ran round at Exeter to continue.

Regarding the stock usage, the workings are those scheduled. The restaurant car will have been an Old Oak spare, used as required in the week for unscheduled reliefs, specials (Newbury race trains used to contain such a car) or a substitute for those under maintenance. It may not have been the same vehicle from week to week. Back in those times the depot would have a couple of pilot locos just engaged in shunting vehicles around.
