hi, I have an appointment cancelled for this afternoon and want to head for home, from Paddington, at about 16.00-16.30.

I have a super off peak ticket that won't be valid until 19.15 and am looking for the cheapest way to travel. is it possible to get an off peak to swindon and use the super off peak by starting short at swindon? i think Reading has restrictions but Swindon doesn't seem to.

is it cheaper to upgrade my ticket to off peak?

any thoughts welcome.

sean

Yes - doing that you can take the 15:52 to Worcester, then on to Hereford and then Abergavenny. Alternatively, you can take the 16:03 from Euston to Birmingham and then pick up the same train to Hereford that continues on via Worcester.

the problem is it won't save me much time and fgw planner says i am not allowed to catch the 15:52, so i would be faced with arguing my case.

i was hoping the super off peak restrictions wouldn't apply at swindon, or i could get a train from swindon which didn't come from london.

looks like i will have to upgrade to off peak, which i am sure will not be fun on friday. can't even talk to the TM because some of them lie.

The journey planner will give you the route if you stipulate 'Avoid Newport S. Wales', which you can get by clicking the 'more options' button.

The earliest you can leave Paddington via Newport on your current ticket is 19:15, getting in at 21:35. The 15:52 gets you in at 20:10. It is slower but it fits in with not requiring a new ticket, that is, being the cheapest option!

Cotswold Line guards won't argue against you catching the 15.52. But the train will be rammed as far as Charlbury, at least, so you may decide against it...

if i am not allowed to catch it, then i shouldn't, whether the guards will argue or not?

It's too late now, but for the SSR fare NRES offers the 1610 Euston-Bangor.
This is one change at Crewe into the 1730 Manchester-Cardiff arr Abergavenny 2011.
The 1552 ex Paddington requires changes at Worcester and Hereford.
The 1603 ex Euston requires changes at New St and Hereford.
But all these routeings end up on the same 1730 Manchester-Cardiff train.
The 1722 Paddington-Hereford is allowed, reaching Abergavenny 2122.

No it doesn't, it requires two tickets if you go via Crewe. The furthest North you can go is Birmingham.

You are right.
NRES offers the journey via Crewe and quotes the SSR fare (£67).
However, clicking to pass through to the FGW site it says "no fares available" for that route.
Same on ATW. Must be a glitch somewhere in the NRES system.

i am confused about why i am allowed to catch it when the fgw planner says i can't.
The validity of a £67 SUPER OFFPEAK RETURN ABERGAVENNY - LONDON TERMINALS Route ANY PERMITTED is set out in Restriction 2Q, available at http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ticket_types/restrictions/2Q or nres.co.uk/2Q. For the return leg, this includes
Return Travel

Valid on any service via Oxford and Evesham.

nres.co.uk/2Q
The failure of some train companies' sites to interpret this restriction correctly appears to be an error.
