Is anyone else seeing strange interchange routings for journeys involving a change at Paddington? For instance Peterborough to Heathrow including a trip from Paddington to Acton Mainline and then back to Paddington?

What day and time? Is it on one of those dates where Acton Main Line is not being served due to engineering work.

Does the detour make the journey longer than it would be to simply wait at Paddington the first time you reach it, or is it using up "slack" in the itinerary but arriving at the same time?

No, it comes from trying to force a journey off of the Heathrow Express by specifying via Acton Main Line but the journey planner still finds HEx with a side trip to Acton ML the quickest journey. Specifying via Hayes gives results using the Elizabeth Line.

Ah, mystery solved then. And the doubleback won't have been detected because AML is not a mandatory timing point.
