GWR have tweeted that they will be having a reduced service tomorrow due to the incident, hope the drivers okay!! From what I have seen on network rails Twitter it's a SPAD, this could have been a lot worse if a train was coming out of the station thank goodness it was empty stock and no one got hurt

The idea of the trap points is to derail the train away from other lines. There was no danger to other trains.

If an electrification (or other) gantry comes down this could very easily foul other lines. There could also be an electrification danger if the power didn't trip immediately. So while the derailed train would not be a direct danger to other trains itself, the consequences of it's derailing could be.

Not to mention members of Network Rail staff who may or may not be lineside.

http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/C42734/2016/06/16/advanced 2P91 the 2217 Reading to Paddington

Looks as though this is the first train to have made it through to Paddington since the incident six hours ago.

Six car turbo formed of 165123, 165133 and 165134, now working the first one out; http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/C42609/2016/06/16/advanced 2N92 the 2333 Paddington to Oxford

1A96 the 1955 Exeter St Davids to London Paddington looks to be the first HSS to get through, and only 85L. http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/C41408/2016/06/16/advanced

Currently no news on the down sleeper, whether it will run or not, or how late it will be.
2R93 has also left PAD all shacks to RDG. 1L91 (after holds en route) approaches PAD 241 late. Sleeper reinstated. But stock still on OOC though. Think there'll be still a 1 zulu or two back out of Paddington.

It strikes me that the location of the mast vs. the location of the trap points was possibly a design flaw. The idea of trap points is to derail and stop an offending vehicle without posing a threat to the railway - clearly it will damage that vehicle, but it shouldn't damage anything else.

The RAIB investigation will potentially be quite interesting.

Indeed, 1L91 has nicely managed 237L into Paddington. Is that the third HSS to make it in?

5C99 has been cancelled (according to realtimetrains) "due to a delay not investigated".

Just like to apologise to anyone who thought my comments were a bit ott before was never my intentions in any form. Trouble with typing in a screen is sometimes the way you mean something can come across a different way. Anyway life's to short to argue and fall out hope you all accept my apology if you feel it was needed sorry

Sleeper still happening- calling additionally at Bristol TM (and not to boot sleeping people off on to a HST for a change !).

I presume the trap points Comutor refers to is the London end exit to Grove Park up sidings which would given a fair chance would deposit the unfortunate unit and driver onto the South Circular and a well known local plumbers merchants?

Being as the problem is at Paddington, why are so many services cancelled at the western ends of the routes? Why for example, are the 6.58 & 7.58 from Swansea cancelled? Surely these HST’s are stabled at Swansea and could have run as far as Reading before returning west? (That would also have enabled people to reach the Heathrow bus link).

The aforementioned services would provide for peak time commuting into Cardiff. Now I suppose, this has had a knock on effect for ATW as everybody tries to cram into their 2 & 3 coach units.

Whilst I realise that Paddington is the main terminal, the world does exist west of Reading!

Did the stock normally stabled at Swansea make it to Swansea last night? Was the incoming train cancelled so no stock there to return?
Many services are being turned at reading this morning

The press and media this morning all reporting SPAD due to driver error, citing network rail as their source.

Is this reasonable of network rail before investigation to make such a statement to the press. Driver has been hung out to dry by the network rail release before the investigation.

Don't those ones go into the big sand trap now ?

I'm thinking of the ones at Crayford B

I think I would want to see what Network Rail actually said before giving them the hairdryer treatment but if they have said that it was due to driver error then that does seem wrong at this stage.

I'm glad that the driver was unharmed but I hope they're doing alright because looking at some of the pictures it must have been horrible to have been in that cab as the train was derailing heading straight into a gantry.

The Exeter Express and Echo has a picture of the front of the Turbo almost embedded in the gantry - how long are the points to this through road? I know a Turbo can shift but well, not preferably off the rails. Looking at the damage, This'll probably end up as the first turbo to return in GWR colours.

And I agree with Ainsworth, a situation I would not like to have been in. A Spad is one thing, going into the gantry is another.

Am I right in assuming that the gantry covered more than just the one platform where the derailment took place, please?

I'm asking because I can't quite understand why the whole station was closed when only a small part of it (as shown by Causton's diagram earlier) seems to have been affected. It looks to me as if the area could have been isolated with a normal service from and to the rest of the station - or am I totally wrong?

Not only is it very likely that rolling stock was displaced, there's also the likelihood staff were having to work beyond their normal end of shift yesterday. That can mean they were not able to book on at their normal time this morning. Safety critical staff such as drivers and guards are required by law/regulation to have a minimum period of rest between shifts.

It's also a safety hazard as bringing down the gantry could injure people, and in the worst case it might be hit by a train on another line. Damaging signalling cables would be an operational inconvenience but not directly hazardous, although damaging power cables probably would.

It rather looks as if they had to switch off the electrical power over a wide area. This then strands the electric trains to and from Heathrow, blocking the line for the diesels forming most of the service. Or at least that's the conclusion drawn from their inability to run any service to or from Ealing Broadway.

"Between Paddington and Reading"? Why can't these announcements ever actually state AT somewhere?! How much closer to Paddington did it have to be to qualify?

I understand wires were bought down across more tracks than the immediately affected line.

3185 form if driver makes an allegation against the signalling (wrong side)
3188 form for TPWS intervention no SPAD
3189 form for a SPAD

All forms are filled out as close to the invent using as much as the drivers own words as possible with all voice coms, S&T data loggers plus any onboard data loggers down loaded as soon as possible. So what happened is known really quickly the why it happened takes a bit longer with all the interviews that need to be conducted.

I have never really understood why open trap points which lead to infrastructure such as this OHLE gantry don't have added protection to arrest 'runaways'. Taking into account the adjacent line speed, even if it causes a degree of additional sideways play in a train that derails, surely that's better than the huge damage to the gantry seen here, with all its knock-on effects (not to mention potential danger to people on footbridges, under bridges etc.)?

If you look at the picture on the BBC news web site article, the damage to the gantry would suggest major effects across many lines!

Probably because it would cost more and as it happens so rarely they'll take the chance.

GWR are running a reduced service, half the Bristols are cancelled and the Cardiffs. The 0658 and 0758 from Swansea are effectively a Cardiff service extended to start from Swansea, hence are cancelled.
