So I am looking to travel Paddington to Cambridge via the H&C line to KingsX in the early morning.

The NR website gives me an Anytime Day Single for £25, whereas brfares.com seems to think a London Terminals -> Cambridge ticket for £22 can be used on this route?

What is the ticket that the NR website is trying to sell me - is it specifically from Paddington?

From Paddington your best bet is Oyster (£2.10, or the bus for £1.40) to Kings X, then the £22 single from there.

BRfares shows the ticket is issued from 'London Terminals'

Paddington is not a valid London Terminal for Cambridge. This is n ot something that brfares will check.

NRE is selling the correct ticket, which is:

http://brfares.com/#fares?orig=0790&dest=CBG&rlc=

albeit more expensive than the Oyster + £22 option. This is a single from any zone 1/2 station to Kings X (or Liverpool Street if you prefer) plus travel from there to Cambridge.

Another valid ticket would be:

http://brfares.com/#fares?orig=AML&dest=CBG&rlc=

this is obviously valid from Paddington, and as it has the Maltese Cross symbol is valid from Paddington to Kings Cross by tube (though not bus).

Thanks, that makes sense now. It seems I've been buying returns to London all my life but I can't remember the last time I bought a ticket commencing from there.

well it doesn't make any difference actually, the return to London, unless a travelcard, would not be valid to Paddington.
