Couple of 313s or 315s would surely do for Cambridge-Stansted? It's a fairly short journey so basic seating and no toilets shouldn't be a problem, and I can't see the loadings being huge either.

Thanks, dont know that area well so didnt know how long the route was, just surprised the Government suggests diesels as I thought lines were electrified around there.

It could be a way of the Government passing the buck on something - so that they aren't saying "no", but they are deferring any decision for a good few years?

Cambridge-Stansted shuttle? Bring some 317/7s back ;) Plenty of 315, 317, 321 trains will be available relatively soon after. Through tickets from extended Busway B services would be fun.

I'd like to see Felixstowe-Nuneaton/Birmingham fully electrified (including a Corby/Oakham MML infill) The Birmingham-Stansted service could be taken over from 170 operation by a few 379s, perhaps - but this is way off-topic, another story!

I assume, of course, you are including electrifying Nuneaton to Birmingham in that :P

Perhaps it depends on whether it would be an actual shuttle or there's a better case for a new or more frequent longer distance service requiring DMU's, like the current Cross Country service to Birmingham. That's probably just wishful thinking however...

Or alternatively it could be an extension to Cambridge of the current Stratford to Bishop's Stortford stoppers (reversing at Stansted Airport, much like the Crewe–Manchester services). You'd need an extra two or three EMUs to do that hourly.

Either way it should stop at all stations. It's a bit silly that no stations between Mountfitchet and Cambridge, except Audley End, have a regular service to the airport.

How many cars is that service (Stratford-Bishop's Stortford) formed of; could it make use of the bay for reversal?
