Probably the 144s were the most recent, and that was a reasonable job (albeit only affecting a small number of the overall number of Pacers)

Then theres FGWs 'Refresh' - Ok, so it consisted of a general interior tidy up, seat repadding/recovering/re moqutetted & an interior repaint, but its a pretty neat job carried out by Exeter none the less!

Some of ATW's pacers have had new seats covers, cushions and panelling etc lately.

True! Wales and Boarders did of course replace the original bus seating with the Chapman stuff in their 142s!

Mind you, Exeters working wonders of the ex Northern 142s has been pretty good considering there only a temporary measure!

Why can't they just let the operators decide what stock they want

So you want people with a 7 year franchise ordering new diesel units with a 25 year lifespan?
What happens to those units when the new operator orders new stock and hands the old ones back?
How much do you think the ROSCOs would have to charge if the new units are only guaranteed a 7 year life?

I agree about the idea of having some NIR 4000 class like trains, and also I think the Hitachi A train or maybe a CSR unit. However, Bombardier could do up some 172s for companies like FGW so their 150s can go up North and kick the pacers out!
