I shall be Pacer bashing in Devon next month, in an attempt to get 142067, my last 142 still in existence! Of the withdrawn units, I had 008 but missed 059. Aslo had both scrapped 143s and all the 141s. Still need the 140 tho...

It seems unreal to think people will actually go out for required 142s! Which means I've got to ask this question (aimed at all those who are out after 142s, not just theblackwatch):
Is it just a desire to get everything in the book with a line under it? Or something else?
I personally need the vast majority of the 142s, still needing 4 of them for all-time sight!
Got 143615 in the book somehow, somewhere, for haulage though, missed 143613.

I've moved the posts referring to 'Pacer bashing' into this new thread so they don't end up taking over the other thread. To try and answer....
I guess my desire is to clear the 142s for haulage (or, as you put it "to get everything in the book with a line under it"). I don't really have any desire to travel hundreds of miles on Pacers, so it is more a case of just scratching the units in for me (for 37412 it is probably different). I've only specifically gone for my last 5 Class 142s - all the others I've either ridden on whilst travelling dfrom A to B, or been somewhere on a day out, spotted a required one and got on it.
Although one day I may get round to working out my mileages behind each unit, I've no up to date mileage records at present - in fact the last time I put any unit moves onto my PC was back in 1997! (They are still accessible on the PC, a 286 which I bought back in 1992 - shockingly, it will be older than some of the people reading this!) :roll:
I do think the number of people going out to record units travelled on has increased a fair bit over the past few years - a mate of mine did a Compass Tour to Scotland last December and was pleased when, during the break, his last 158 rolled in and he got it.
At least by getting (nearly) all of my 142s now, I won't be trying to chase after particular examples just before they are withdrawn, as I did with many of the older generation units such as 303s, 312s and the ex Southern Region Slammers (and even the 442s - though I should get one of the 3 I need as it is one destined for Southern!).
Incidentally, if anyone tries to argue that what I do is mad, all I will do is agree with you!!

They were threatening to get us to sign pacers a while back. The railnews vacancy section was almost worn through by us looking for other jobs!
Thankfully they changed there minds.:grin:

Just a novice question from me but what's so great about pacer's is it just the novelty or do you wanna laugh at the crapness cause them reasons id understand just please dont say there rateable.

I do pacer bashing to get them in the book as well, I love pacers (if you havent guess already 
)
Its just they are unique and they bounce alot, good Alexander engines as well.
I know some of you don't agree but we all have different opinons (imagine if we all hated 37s, 142s, 50s, HSTs etc!)

Thanks for the reply theblackwatch. I didn't think you were a Pacer basher as such. Indeed, the image that conjured up in my head of a basher at Manchester Victoria celebrating clearing a 142 for 1,000 miles was worrying.
It is, then, as I expected and people are mainly after getting haulage off them. Got the majority to get in the book myself, but I'll eventually get them when the HSTs finish service. Until then, I can't see myself going on a Pacer bashing trip.

A friend of mine had over 20,000 miles on the Class 141 units! No, he didn't go out to bash them, but he had a daily 20 commute to Leeds, which was normally a 141. He wasn't impresssed when, a couple of years after he moved to London, the train went over to a pair of Class 37s!

20,000 miles on 141s, all I can say is OUCH!
A count reveals just 21 142s have lines under them in my book. All bar 143613 on the 143s, just 144011 and 013 on the 144s. Many lines to go it seems...

oh what fun! the only part on a pacer I cant see being fun is doing one from Taunton - Cardiff stopping everywhere, and one going round the notorious Barry Curve! SSSSSSSSCCCCCCCRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEECCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCHHHHHHH AAAAAAAAAA my ears are bleeding!!!!!

4 hours salop - Swansea, i'm sure people would be have been happy, not! The HoW route is boring on a tour never mind with units like the brick they currently use, I think even I would have given that a miss

I can see people doing coverage maps by traction soon enough. The day I bump into someone with a 142 coverage map will be bizarre.

Probably looks much better than my coverage map with 37s...
Well it's a rail atlas (have one for any traction and one for 37's) should be putting a nit more track in it on Saturday, Peterbourgh - Kings X not via Hartford loop, only ever done the route going round the loop :roll:
