In the pre-technology (and pre-Beeching) days porters on station platforms used to shout out the name of their stop. Usually as incomprehensibly as newspaper sellers. The man at Elslack station on the Skipton-Colne line used to shout
'Ell's slack, 'Eaven's busy.' (Slack being local dialect for short of trade).
I remember as a boy, coming home to Tod from Leeds, at a stop just out of Halifax hearing the porter shout "FUIT". "Where are we, Dad? I asked, perplexed.
"Luddendenfoot, son".
