P&O - if it folds, how might capacity be increased

If P&O fails due to the current problems, how might capacity be increased for freight?

It's possible I suppose that a "fire sale" of ships might occur to other operators, and there are plenty of potential staff to crew them.

Any thoughts?

Well with the very small number of Eurostar or conventional freight trains I think the terminals and rolling stock are more likely to be limiting on the Chunnel Shuttle than the tunnel capacity itself.

It probably depends on each route and whether the competitors e.g. Stena Line, Irish Ferries or DFDS consider them viable routes to take over.

I suspect Dover - Calais would be increased by one of the other operators in the event of P&O withdrawing / failing.

Possibly Hull - Zeebrugge as well.

Not so sure about Cairnryan - Belfast - Stena already operate on that as well and I'm not sure there's enough traffic to sustain 2 operators.

I suspect that on the Dover routes the other operators may add one additional boat each to their services, and otherwise seek to increase prices to stifle (in particular, peak) demand and improve profitability. Whatever, I don't think it will end particularly advantageous for consumers. Not sure on their other routes; but I would guess there is a fair amount of overcapacity already.

In terms of Dover-Calais, there will always be someone willing to take on the route. It's a simple, no-fuss operation with little complexity, especially if foot passengers are no longer taken. The Spirit of... vessels are purpose built for Dover-Calais too, so they're unlikely to sit around doing nothing.

Hull-Rotterdam and Hull-Zeebrugge are freight routes, and they do make plenty of money on the minicruises. I also wouldn't underestimate the popularity of both routes with bus tours.

The questionable ones are Cairnryan-Larne and Liverpool-Dublin. The first has quite a few disadvantages due to the location of Larne, and Stena are only 15 minutes longer into the centre of Belfast with easy onwards links to the rest of the island. Stena also heavily invested in this route in recent years. The latter is also questionable, as it just doesn't seem to have any real advantages beyond tourist traffic.

Le Shuttle normally has the capability to put on additional departures of their freight services if there are queues and they can resource the train sets and crews. I don't know what the situation with that is at the moment however.

I thought Zeebrugge had been withdrawn - does it still operate for freight?

I completely missed that! I saw mention of it elsewhere and didn't check to see if it was withdrawn for passengers. It seems to be just a LOLO service these days.

I wouldn't be surprised to see it make a return if P&O stay around, as it was heavily used by tour groups.
