Oyster Single Fare

Now for those clever people.

Just checking the statement I got today from an LU ticket office and I noticed something slightly odd.

I have a Y-P enabled prepay Oyster. I touched in this morning at Euston LU and out at Waterloo LU. Then I met up with a mate at Waterloo, had a coffee and clocked in at Waterloo East NR. We finally got out at Charlton (Zone 3) NR.

Of course what I didn't realise until just then was that it was treated as an OSI by the system so I was only charged for one complete journey Euston all the way to Charlton, for £2.05. Now I cannot seem to understand how they derived that figure as none of the Oyster single fares / NR fares, whether with Y-P discount applied seem to give that figure. Bearing in mind that it was the first journey I made today capping shouldn't kick in either.

Anyone care to explain?

Having just checked the TfL Single Fare Finder, £2.05 is the correct "National Railcard" off-peak fare for the journey you've described, with the undiscounted fare being £3.10.

FWIW, the OSI time for Waterloo (LU) -> Waterloo East is 40 minutes.

Using TfL's own "Getting Around With Oyster" booklet, the only £3.10 fare I can see is the Peak Zone 1-4 ticket. Given that it is Saturday today (well, yesterday) and Charlton is in Zone 3 I guess it's not that one. The NR Oyster Zone 1-3 Off-Peak single is £2, so still not sure where the £3.10/£2.05 was from.

The OP has a Y-P R/C, so the booklet you need is "Getting Around With Discounts". They're not on display at most stations but you can ask for one.

Euston to Charlton is not NR only though, it's NR+U1. The addition of U1 to a Non-TfL adult rail fare is £1.10 at all times. Hence £2 becomes £3.10, which when discounted rounds down to £2.05.

All it does is list the different concession cards and what discount they give.

Well, sort of. If you select the "National Railcard" option for that journey you do indeed get £2.05 as the off-peak fare. However, the peak fare is shown as £3.70 if you touch in before 09.30 or between 16.00 and 19.00. Now that is correct before 09.30 as railcard discounts are not available before then, but they should be applied in the afternoon, so I think the fare should then be £2.45.

The system is too complex even for the fares simplifier to handle it . This is why I just bought a 1 month Z1-6 TKT on my Zip and done.

Oyster Off Peak starts at 09:30 but the Railcard discount only kicks in at 10:00 as it does when buying paper tickets. It should also be noted that the Railcard does not give discounts on LT services (i.e Tube/DLR/Tram/Bus) though use of these services do count towards the £5 cap. As such, I would like to know whether TfL or NR pricing takes precedence on shared routes like New Cross Gate - West Croydon/Sydenham or Stratford - South Ruislip (with OSI at Sudbury considering the flat fare principle). May try this at some stage during the week.

Correct, TfL do price that flow.
