Oyster Single Fare Finder Alternative Routes

Can anyone explain this? I thought that mixed mode is never cheaper than a single mode.

Canada Water Underground - Vauxhall Underground £2.20
(presumably by Jubilee & Victoria lines)

Canada Water Underground - Vauxhall Rail £1.60
(presumably Jubilee to Waterloo then SWT)

Prices are from the Oyster single fare finder for an undiscounted adult travelling Off Peak.

The latter is the NR Zone 2 fare travelling via Clapham Junction. If travelling to a NR station which doesn't have TfL fares from a ELL core station, it'll be charged at the NR rate, rather than mixed mode.

For example, Canada Water to East Dulwich is charged at the NR rate, while Canada Water to Peckham Rye is TfL.

Ah I see the problem, I didn't scroll down to 'Alternative Fares'. Oops! The mixed mode via Waterloo is over double the price, at £3.50

(It is good now that you don't have to click an extra link to see the Alternative fares though)

Ouch!

More should be done to educate people of the unfair mixed mode 'tax', which I'm sure many of us are sure to avoid, but many people who are not 'in the know' must be caught out by this!

Recently travelled Rickmansworth to Wimbledon Return both journeys off peak with a railcard on Oyster PAYG
Outward Rickmansworth - Marylebone (Chiltern) M'bone - Oxford Circus - Vauxhall (underground ) - Vauxhall (NR) - Wimbledon charged £2.60 Returned same way except via Baker Street & Met line charged £3.35

That's the default fare, via Zone 1 but not including the mixed-mode 'tax'.

I'm puzzled as to why you were charged this. Did you tap out of the LU station & back in to National Rail station at Vauxhall?

That's the correct fare, off peak with a Railcard, paying the unfair mixed mode including zone 1 'tax'.

You can get it down to £1.80 if you avoid Zone 1 and use the relevant pink validator.

I can confirm that I did touch in & out at Vauxhall in both directions. took fastest route with least amount of walking at interchanges.

I've seen this issue before. It's something to do with changing at Marylebone. I think it's an error in the fares database.

There's no interavailability between Vauxhall and Wimbledon AIUI.

Vauxhall - Wimbledon is a 'red route' (see map), so the mixed mode 'tax' does apply.

njr001 now has to hope that this error isn't spotted/fixed, and the unfair tax applied for future journeys!
