I have two expired student photocards from 2009 and 2010. Back when I applied there was a fee to cover admin. Though they can still be used without a discount; I no longer need them as I've a regular Oyster card now. Technically they're still TFL property so can I get back any deposit fee like with regular Oyster cards if I hand them in at the tube station?

I doubt it. The deposit is called just that. An admin fee is to cover creating the card with your photo etc. If you want to make sure then try handing them in - at least you won't have them cluttering your drawer up then.
