Oyster PAYG query

I had £5.70 on my card. I went to East Croydon - Victoria and back on saturday. Now I only have £0.50! Is this right as on the website it should only be £3.40.

total for return is £5-20.

I do not know where you got £3-40 from.

In that case it looks like it didn't register your railcard. Ring up the helpline and ask them if it's registered properly.

You do for NR journeys. It's only bus/tram and wholly tube/dlr fares that aren't discounted. But as you say, the price cap is discounted as well so you'll get there quicker with tube/dlr.

I thought you got them on single fares if it was an NR journey. If this isn't true I've been labouring under a false impression.

I rung the helpline up and they said my YP card was not registered so I need to go to a tube station to register it! I've already done that once at an Oyster outlet which is annoying!

Just checked the single fare finder. West Drayton to Paddington is an example of an oysterised before 2010 and the discount applies to off-peak fares. New Cross Gate to West Croydon is now Overground and the discount still applies to off-peak fares.

For hybrid journeys like Rectory Road to Oxford Circus, there is no Railcard discount even though it involves NR, which is why I said there is no discount for journeys involving LT. You certainly wouldn't get a discount with a paper ticket + Railcard.

London Overground is a special case - it is TfL run so part of LT but also part of ATOC (National Rail). Depending on the journey, you may or may not get a Railcard discount when using Oyster. I.e for Gunnersbury - West Brompton, I expect you'd only get a discount if you use the pink reader at Willesden Junction.

I did bring up the New Cross Gate - West Croydon/Crystal Palace thing in another thread. My ZIP card which gives me child fares on LT routes does give that discount on that route. My YP Oyster also gives me the discounted fare. This is because LO is part of both TfL and National Rail.

Looking in the opposite situation, TfL pricing continues to apply on certain non LT services when using Oyster - the NR routes Oysterised prior to 02/01/10 although I need to double check Victoria - Balham. Just like with London Overground, you get Railcard discounts also.

I think the general rule is routes where you'd get a Railcard discount on paper tickets, you will also get on Oyster.

The WDT-PAD example is indeed a little odd since before 2010 the fares were in line with LU fares. Since the introduction of PAYG oyster on NR the fares were frozen in line with LU fares, whereas a journey from LST (underground) to ECR (National Rail) falls under the new fares regime which charges a premium for services that are NR-only or NR+LU.

So WDT-PAD for example comes out at £4.20 or £2.40, (the same fare as Heathrow (LU) to Holborn (LU)).

However a journey from Liverpool Street (LU) to East Croydon (NR) will be charged at the new NR+LU fare (£5.00 or £3.70).

Interestingly out of the two examples above, both will have a NR discount applied, but not if the WDT-PAD journey was extended to say, Holborn.

Incidently a journey from Liverpool Street to East Crodyon might just as easily be completed via ELL from Shoreditch High Street, in which case the fares would be £3.90 and £2.60 peak/off peak respectively, and the £2.60 will have a railcard discount applied to it.

Well, thanks to the legacy Oyster PAYG implementation on FGW services this is turning out to be as clear as mud isn't it?
