Oyster + Extra Zone

Hi, I have an Oyster card for Zones 1-3, but need to travel from Canary Wharf (Z2) to Wembley Park (Z4) - can I buy the extra bit from Zone 3 - 4 and if so how do I do this?

As causton said, just put some PAYG credit on (to cover a zone 4 single) and make sure you touch in at the start and out at the end of your journey.

If you want to pay cash fare for the additional bit, it will cost you £4.30, so as the others say, stick to Oyster PAYG.

In this particular case (TfL rail zone 3 vs 3-4) they are the same, but the important point here is how the extension is calculated. It is always just the zones not covered, hence a zone 1-6 journey made with a zone 1-2 travelcard would be charged as a zone 3-6 journey. It doesn't matter whether there is a station on the boundary or not. It also works inside too (which paper tickets do not) so a similar zone 1-6 journey with a zone 4-6 travelcard would be charged as a zone 1-3 journey.

For completeness I should point out that the journey is charged at the rate that prevails for the whole journey (covered by travelcard and not) even if the rate for the bit not covered would be cheaper. This sometimes catches people out. Also, if your travelcard covers the middle of your journey you will be charged the lower of the whole single fare (as if you didn't hold a travelcard) and the two extra bits added together.
