Noticed at Elizabeth Line Custom House, with a major exhibition at the adjacent Excel and substantial crowds expected (though not really happening), that the exit gates were opened, and staff shouting "Paper tickets walk straight through", which was coming over of course as "paper tickets WALK STRAIGHT THROUGH", which the vast majority were doing, far more than typically have paper tickets (a railway expression in its own right, not particularly understood outside the cognoscenti).

I understand that if you come back in at the same station later, provided the staff have set it so, the system autocompletes the previous trip. What happens to those who don't come back in later? Full charge for incomplete journey I guess.

I don't know how TfL have got Custom House so wrong. Two years on there are still constant announcements for those transferring from DLR to Elizabeth to "always touch out to pay the correct fare", despite there still being no means to touch out before getting to the Elizabeth entrance gates. In fact the announcements and notices have been recently updated, yet again, so must still be an issue. It would take about 20 lines of SQL code to write the Oyster logic to complete an open DLR journey as you go through the Elizabeth gates. If the IT team are so lacking in such a skill I offer to write the code for them at no charge.

I think it also takes a rather small amount of thinking to theorise that the Oyster system is vastly more complicated than that, and not only is it not that easy, but the suggested idea would cause ridiculous amounts of overcharging or undercharging in other situations where tapping is forgotten.
