trying to work out if there's a saving here.

if i have a gold card as per

Disabled Persons Railcard
Gold Card
HM Forces Railcard

You can get:
34 per cent off off-peak Oyster single fares on all rail services in London
34 per cent off off-peak daily price caps
Discounted Off-Peak Day Travelcards (also for Network Railcard and Family and Friends Railcard holders)

To get the discounted Oyster fares below, you need to add your Railcard discount to your Oyster card, 18+ Student Oyster photocard or 16+ Oyster photocard. You can do this at Tube, London Overground and some National Rail ticket offices.
National Railcard holders do not get any discount on 7 day, monthly or longer period Travelcard season tickets.

then assuming i go and buy the cheapest gold card available which is on the isle of white i think, then i get a discount on the rail travel.
does that mean if i take a train from a zone 6 station and end the journey at a zone 2 tube station (no barriers etc at the train/tube interchange) that there's a discount? is it rail only or tube too?

Yes, you get a discount for Tube and mixed rail+Tube journeys as well as rail.

Up to you to do the maths to see if it's worthwhile though!
