I needed to make a quick trip in London today but forgot my Oyster Card and have no contactless options on me so bought a new Oyster Card.

As it turns out the journey only ended up costing £4.80 so now I have an Oyster Card that cost me a fiver deposit with £5.20 that I might as well refund back to my pocket

Anyway according to the TfL website :

https://tfl.gov.uk/fares-and-payments/replacements-and-refunds/refunds-at-ticket-machines

You just tap your card on a reader and select the Refund option - except that didn't seem to exist!

Am I doing something wrong? I was using the 'underground' machines at Kings Cross near the staircase to the exit near St Pancras

The Oyster card needs to be 48 hours old before the refund option appears. Try again in 2 days.

Wrong machines. They are not Underground machines are branded as Southeastern and East Midlands Trains.

Any 'multifare', I.e. The double-width, change-giving machines at Tube stations will be able to do the refund, after 48 hours as mentioned above.

Apologies I was trying with the correct machines but not 48 hours. Will have to try again upon my return from Orlando :D
