They cannot deduct it from credit. The card will be hotlisted if the auto-top-up isn't settled and the next time it is touched on a fixed reader it will be permanently disabled. In those circumstances I don't know whether you would be able to get the £11ish back, but I assume you still would as long as you had an explanation.

Would it be possible to use up the remaining £6 (£11?) of the OP's own money on buses?

Depends on whether the hotlist has been downloaded to the bus, I guess.

I've also been in this situation. Someone called me, and I explained my various woes, and it was agreed that I could pay within two weeks.

I did so. It seems churlish (self-defeating even) to not cooperate.

I am also owed an oyster refund, for which I have a reference number for, and need to call up 24 hours before my next London trip.

Churlish, self-defeating? I don't agree.

They don't ensure payment can be authorised prior to loading Oyster cards. When the payment then fails (I'm sure this happens quite often) they resort to making threats of "further action". Then they expect the commuter to pay just so they can get a refund.

If I needed to use my Oyster card again I would have paid, but I don't see why should be left out of pocket because their system can only add credit and not remove it.

I fail to understand (a) how you have been/would be left out of pocket (b) how you expect the system to authorize a credit card in the 0.3 seconds it takes to touch in or on buses which have no connection to a network, or (c) how you expect an asynchronous system to be able to debit an Oyster card once and once only.

Let's not forget your own contribution to the hassle by not cancelling an auto top-up you wouldn't be wanting any more, nor updating your bank details.

I haven't once said I've been left out of pocket? I would be out of pocket during the time it took them to process the refund.

I'm aware of my own contribution, my issue here is that they want me to pay £20 only for them to refund it. In the mean time I am down £20. What is the actual point in that? It's not my fault the system is so restrictive.

Anyway, they can whistle.

Okay, assuming you don't have a credit card (which would allow you to pay them and then receive the refund to settle the card before its due date), what about items b and c?

I'd also like to hear your thoughts on island's b and c. The fact remains though that you signed up for auto top-up in the first place and agreed to the conditions which include keeping your bank details up to date and reacting quickly if something goes wrong. How were they supposed to know you didn't want your card anymore? And every successful auto top-up is effectively on credit because you have the funds 2-3 days before it hits your account.
