Just come across this conversation on Twitter:

https://twitter.com/TCanyeezy/status/454576471743676416

Not sure what ticket the passeneger is using from New Malden to Kings Cross but if they are using Oyster (or even a New Malden-Zone U1 SDS) surely EC are bound to honour the ticket due to the disruption on SW?

Looking at the conversation, the passenger then confirmed he has a 1st Advance from Kings Cross to York, so presumably is using Oyster or a single to U1.

The problem I see is that he chose to take the 11:55 train from New Malden to get to his 12:53 train out of Kings Cross, I believe this is NOT enough time left to make the connection, as the minimum cross London connection times from Vauxhall to Kings Cross are quite lengthy so in theory it is not a valid connection!

Maybe EC will honour the passengers' ticket on the next service as a gesture of goodwill, not good that the SWT twitter team suggest EC should allow him to travel on the next service though!

And to complicate matters it seems the 1253 is actually a GC service, the recommended connection however is 1140 from New Malden. Nevertheless, had they caught the 1140 they would still have probably missed the 1253 from KX as the 1140 was 22 minutes late so the point still stands as to whether EC, VT, GC, EM etc are obliged to honour a point to point ticket where the train is missed due to delays on a connecting journey using a separate ticket.

I think the standard response from East Coast Twitter is to advise asking station staff. The twitter people are not saying "no", they are just not saying "yes".

If minimum connection times are met then it should be valid on the next service by that TOC, even with split tickets.

I would ask station staff in this case.

There are some GC/HT joint staff at Kings Cross sometimes. I'm not sure what their roles are.

The rule is long and complex, but broadly speaking if all of the journey is on National Rail tickets (i.e. tickets with the crow's feet logo), Travelcards, or a combination, then travel is supposed to be honoured on later trains when there is disruption. There are two provisos, one is PlusBus and the other is when the minimum connecting time hasn't been allowed.

If Oyster pay as you go or Underground/DLR single tickets are being used for part of the journey, then this concession does not apply.

Yes I was thinking that being in coach F did not correspond to being in East Coast first class.

If Oyster PAYG is being used then you need to have the delay verified by a travel centre which can read the card, as per the advance fare FAQs.

Underground/DLR single tickets are certainly covered.

Yes, I said that.
Underground/DLR single tickets are certainly covered.
Only if part of a through ticket including National Rail.

To be honest we can yammer on about the conditions all we like; on the ground the staff member will either do what is fair and reasonable or else make up a policy on the spot. Let's not forget that most staff haven't ever heard of the Advance Fares FAQ.

Is using Chiltern Railways service and PAYG Oyster from Rickmansworth to Marylebone and allowing the minimum connection time between Marylebone and Kings Cross considered to be having started a journey via National Rail and therefore in event of disruption be eligible
to be put on the next available service from Kings Cross for holders of advance tickets?

Yes.

Your "journey" is considered to be starting when you first board a 'National Rail' service and/or where you start using a 'Rail & partner' ticket.

So if you were to commence your journey on LU, I would advise against using PAYG, and instead use a Travelcard or ticket from "London U<zones>" but that isn't applicable in your case.
