Has anyone had experience of getting a refund on Oyster sent by cheque?
The woman at Kings Cross told me she had cancelled the money on my card but I would have to phone the Oyster card helpline to request it from them but I would not be charged an admin fee as it was just pre pay. When I got to Highbury the man told me I would get a cheque sent within 5days but I would have to pay an admin fee.
Who is right, and can anyone tell me how much the admin fee is. How long it will take and whether I need to phone oyster. Thankyou

If anyone knows the answer to this, Mojo and MikeWh will do (along with others I'm sure), but I do wonder if there is enough information here for them to provide an answer.

What is the refund for? Is this compensation for a delay, or for overcharging? What were the circumstances?

I would have thought there should not be an 'admin fee' if it was due to a fault of their own, however as I have absolutely no idea why you are being refunded it is impossible to say either way.

The maximum cash refund at an LU ticket office is £10 where the original credit was paid for with a different payment type. Is this the type of refund you are requesting, for more than £10?

I had one once when I bought a season ticket by debit card at a TVM at Peckham Rye which never actually loaded onto my card. Went through the helpline (the 16+ Zip department) and I was sent a cheque, no mention of any admin fee.

Also had a cheque when I lost a 16+ Zip card, plus the credit refunded. Again, no mention of an admin fee.

I once paid £20 cash for a £10 topup at Woolwich Arsenal. The machine spat out £10 worth of coins but didn't load my credit onto the card. DLR sent me a Postal Order for £10 after I chased it up.

Now I only top up at ticket offices or the FasTiS machine in the office.

I no longer need my Oyster card so need my credit and deposit back.

I handed my Oyster card in at Uxbridge and got the money sent to my home address as a cheque and the £3 deposit in cash with no admin free.

No there is no admin fee for cashing in an oyster with PAYG. The only time an admin fee wades in is if you have a season.

If the PAYG balance plus the deposit on the card adds up to £10 or under, it can be refunded in cash at a tube ticket office. If all of the pre-pay on your oyster was added in the same tender, it can be refunded in the same tender. (£80 by bank card, 10p by coin, can't be refunded at a ticket office). If it's mixed tender and over £10 it has to be done via a cheque.

But no, there should be no admin fee on a refund of a deposit and PAYG and you should refuse to pay one!

You should call oyster to confirm the refund has gone through, though.
