Oxford to Chester XC only.

Hi guys, a friend of mine has an XC rover ticket and we wish to go to Chester on the weekend. Am I right in thinking the best way to do it would be Oxford to Stafford then buy a separate ticket for the rest of it or can we get closer to Chester on XC or to a better change point for a cheaper fare to Chester?

If the times/fares from Stafford aren’t ideal, it may be worth looking at changing at Man Picc, as Northern have fairly cheap advances to Chester. A return from Stockport/Manchester is also cheaper than a return from Stafford, but the journey may be lengthened.

Aren't there a few XC services a day that go via Crewe? If the timings of those are suitable then that's the best option in terms of a cheaper fare to Chester.

It would seem they are all down trains. So go the wrong way for us.

The least-effort way is to pick up an ATW Holyhead 158 (via Shrewsbury) in the West Midlands at Birmingham International or New St or Wolverhampton.
In the opposite hours you catch an Aberystwyth service and change at Shrewsbury into the Cardiff-Holyhead.
But probably the fastest is via Stafford and Crewe.
Stoke/Crewe also works but probably slower.
Just think, you can have another Voyager leg (VT) from Crewe to add to the XC one...

Could pick one up from Stockport/Man Picc possibly, then change onto a VT/ATW at Crewe? Depends whether you value the time or the saving more.
