A MULTI-MILLION-POUND expansion of Oxford station is planned in order to create a rail link to challenge the A34.

Network Rail has submitted plans to Oxford City Council that would see longer platforms built to allow Chiltern Railways’ extended trains to stop there.

It is forecast that 3.3 million more passengers will pass through the station each year by 2026 compared to 2011.

The Chiltern trains would have nine carriages instead of four to cope with the extra demand, and would run from Bicester, Banbury and the new Oxford Parkway station in Water Eaton to London Marylebone.

As far as I was aware Chiltern's plans for longer platforms only involved extending platforms to run up to 8-car trains. I don't think anything longer than 7 cars runs currently, although the loco hauled silver sets are effectively 8 cars (6+ loco+DVT). Will there really be 9-car 168s running to Oxford?

I think the paper is mixing up two separate issues. We discussed the latest planning application a couple of weeks ago in another thread:

The drawings and planning statement on the council site certainly don't imply a major increase in length initially, but one platform is aligned to be converted into a through platform in a future phase.

There is however a CP5 9 car lengthening project on Chiltern (enhancements plan project LNW007), but it only includes 5 specific stations between Banbury and Marylebone, all on the main line.

The 9 car extension was discussed last year here based on the Network Rail announcement here.

As far as I can tell it looks like the work has been done at Bicester and Haddenham at least.

Chiltern currently run one 8-car service - 1H17 0628 Birmingham Moor Street to London Marylebone - which is usually 2x3-car 168 with a 2-car 172 on the back - although of course it's not running this week due to the landslip disruption.
