Oxford -> Sheffield & back on 12/11/11

I've had a look at a couple of things and I can find a same day return for £52 (2xAdvance).

As it's to go to football, I need to be there for 14:00 approx (allows for late running) and wouldn't leave much before 17:30.

Does anyone know if there is a cheaper option?

Split into Off-Peak Day Returns for

Sheffield - Derby
Derby - Birmingham
Birmingham - Banbury
Banbury - Oxford

Total £44.60

If you can take one of the CrossCountry services that go via Coventry, split at Coventry instead of Birmingham to bring the total down to £40.90.

Oh and it might be possible to save a tiny bit more by looking for split advances at the same places. But the flexibility in doing it all with walk-up tickets (CDR or SDR) is hard to beat.

You might be able to get it marginally cheaper by doing Birmingham to Burton on Trent and a Derbyshire Wayfarer instead of the BHM-DBY/DBY-SHF split, but the through trains from Oxford to Sheffield don't usually stop at Burton so probably more hassle than it's worth.

I was looking to use the direct trains, so Compact's solution looks best.

I also have a Network card, so that might make the Banbury leg even cheaper!
