Oxenholme Serious Incident?

Hi all,
Apologies if already covered, but NRES reports that regretably there was a person hit by a train yesterday near Oxenholme. Also the train has been severely damaged.
Major delays overnight.
My sympathies to all involved.

The resulting delays seem to have cleared now according to National Rail enquiries, which was reporting earlier this morning of delays of around 30 minutes to trains running between Lancaster and Oxenholme.

This incident has caused big problems for the sleepers, with NRE earlier reporting three of the four trains as being heavily delayed: Indeed, my train overtook one of the southbound sleepers, in the hands of 90029, at Rugby at 07:55 this morning, and there were no signs that the other southbound sleeper had reached Euston either at the time that my train arrived there.

It sounds to be a very unfortunate turn of events.

I have just seen the Highland Sleeper pass through Rugely Trent Valley at 11:40 (that's 333 minutes late.....)

Highland sleeper not due into Euston until 1307, thats 16.5 hours after it left Inverness!
I believe 92030 was involved and was damaged resulting in trains backing up behind it

The highland sleeper still hasnt reached Euston yet, expected arrival is 13.17 - 5 hours and 30 minutes late.

All I can say is that it must have been a very nasty incident indeed for NRE to mention the severity of the resultant damage on their Current Service Disruptions page. I really do feel sorry for the staff and any passengers who witnessed this and those who had to clear up afterwards.

It is always sad when these tragedies happen it must be terrible for the families and the train crew and especially those involved in the appalling clean up.
Unfortunately this is becoming more common on the network lately there seems to be at least one incident a day at the moment i can't imagine things getting so bad that it is the only option for someone.

Indeed, must of been a very serious incident to still be causing major disruption the following day

Just found a news story, police were called at 2145 to a location near Oxenholme Lake District to find a man had been struck by the train, police treating it as non suspicious, very sad when these incidents happen, thoughts with the driver, families and all involved.

I should imagine the "usual" damage would be comprised of broken windscreens and light housings, damaged casings/panels on the front of the vehicle, et cetera - I think any further damage would indeed be abnormal, and it sounds like this incident may have been unusual in this regard.

I don't like to be macabre - don't read on if you don't want to - but this is the only way I can say it: perhaps the casualty became trapped in one of the vehicle's mechanisms somehow.

It looks like the sleeper got held between Stafford and Colwich for an hour for some reason as well! The first Southbound Virgin to run (0540) passed it at this point too and has already arrived in London! On reailtime trains it said the delay was due to XC...guess not too much difference between a freight train and a crowded voyager!

That's one of the worst non-weather-related delays to a Sleeper that I've seen for a while!

Indeed, I consider 92's damn near indestructible but just like any locomotive but it is always possible that the brake system takes a hit (didn't a 150 hit a dog a few years back and it took out the brakes, leaving the unit stuck with the dogs rather angry owner screaming at the driver).

I got 92030 going north through Warrington that morning, it seems that 030 has been on the Tesco's for quite a while. I guess they will have to stick another loco on for a change, that said I hope they don't use this as an excuse to stick it in storage.

Many thanks to you all for your posts. Indeed the extent of the damage to the train involved made me surprised. I feel extremely sorry for the driver, emergency services, the family of the victim and all others involved.

92030 was pictured going south through stafford later today, so obviously they got it fixed well enough for it to continue solo.

In all seriousness, though, the usual with regards to thoughts being with the victim's family, the driver and anyone else involved.

Does anyone know if this was a suicide, or an accident? I know there's been some engineering work up there recently, so hopefully it's not a railway worker. I can't imagine that hitting a suicidal person would be a very nice experience, and I bet it would be 10 times worse if it was a railway worker who'd not got out of the way.
