Overton to Edinburgh / Glasgow 09/2014

Good Morning All.

I would be very grateful for some advice for a trip I'll be making this September.

I wish to leave Overton Mon, 08/09 am and travel to Glasgow - returning from Glasgow 12/09 - arriving back in Overton as late as you like!!!!

The best return rate (via Waterloo / Euston) is coming in at around £100.00 using advance tickets (which I've no problem with) that I can come up with.....I am happy to use any interesting routing / ticket splitting - not afraid of changes but really need to keep the costs to a minimum as the trip is for a non-reimbursable course and I am self-employed!

If it is of any relevance I have a Network Railcard.......oh and just me travelling.

I think that Advance fares are going to be the cheaper option.

On those days, Advance fares between London and Edinburgh seem to start from £38.70 on the East Coast website (which includes a 2% discount for booking online with East Coast). Advance fares between Overton and Edinburgh start from £45.10, which means you are paying £6.40 for Overton to Kings X including the London Underground.

There's a £45.10 Overton-Edinburgh Advance on the 0920 arriving 1613.

There's a £45.10 Edinburgh-Overton Advance on the 1731 arriving 0037.

If you want to go out earlier on the 8th, there are £44.10 Basingstoke-Edinburgh Advances on the 0539 arriving 1211 and on the 0717 arriving 1322. A single from Overton to Basingstoke to connect into the 0717 would be £4.60 but there are no trains from Overton to Basingstoke that connect into the 0539.

So a total of £90.20 or £93.80.

Thanks Romilly - very much appreciated. Advances seem the way to go on this -I can't seem to get anything cheaper via Banbury / Wolves or any splits that I know. Pay up time I think.

Cheaper by Coach but 11ish hours with a change......either Oxford or London Vic..........EEEEEK! No Way.

I know this is a railforum but have you thought about flying from Gatwick?

It's a long shot but it might also be worth checking the sleeper to see if there are any still any bargain berths available.

Thanks Hadders - certainly a good shout with the plane - but I've been annoyed / delayed with security hold-ups etc through Gatters on too many occasions in the last couple of years- including this route - so don't like that option (but not as much as disliking the bus (oops sorry coach!)..... and weirdly I like the train!!!!
