Overton disruption 28/01/25

Interesting trip on 1L49 1620 Waterloo to Exeter today. All OK left Basingstoke on time then came to a stand at Worting Jn. Seemingly a points failure and guard asked if anyone on the train knew the route via Southampton. After a few minutes we were away but announced it was terminating at Southampton with a stop at Winchester with taxis to Overton, Whitchurch, Andover and Grateley. Quick run to Winchester where no staff knew what was going on and taxis would only take paying customers. Between a group of us we got a taxi to Whitchurch and Overton and I was home by 1820 with a farly reasonable £40 fare, just one hour late. I do wonder how Salisbury and beyond to Exeter passengers got on though as they must have been left to their own devices at Southampton!

May have misunderstood this but the announcement was looking for a passing driver who knew the route from Basingstoke to Salisbury via Southampton.

Or that famous scene from Airplane or the disaster films it parodies? This happened to me in a café. The proprietor called 'Is there a doctor here?' as someone had fainted, and a couple of my pals pointed to me and another pal, saying gleefully, 'These guys are doctors!' We had to explain that we were Doctors of Philosophy and not much use in the situation.

Whatever the issue was, looks like it was resolved as the 17;23 to Exeter ran through via Overton, all be 50 minutes late. I guess most likely any passengers at Southampton would have taken the next train towards Salisbury.

Probably would have been cheaper to get off the train at Basingstoke had you known about the issues, considering there is an half hourly bus service towards Andover, but I guess it depends if you wanted Overton itself or Quidhampton

Maybe it was a Waterloo driver who didn't sign Southampton - Salisbury via Romsey

I never updated my passport to Dr for that reason. Do not want the crew thinking there is a doctor on board. Should I make it to Professor then that will be a different matter.

I do not sign any routes, but do take some routes too often.

We left Basingstoke on time with no indication of any problem. Had I known would have got the bus. As it was we did get back from Winchester quickly.

There were 4 of us in the taxi and one of them paid the fare and said she would claim it back. In my experience they usually do but it can take a couple of weeks.

Likewise with my passport, although that is mostly Mrs ES making sarcastic comments about watching me explain to the crew that I am a doctor of philosophy, not medicine. On the other hand, to get a PhD is such a slog that out of sheer cussedness I am known as Dr on anything else official, so suspect it will creep onto my passport via my driving licence. As for professor, in current financial climate cannot see my place giving them out unless I find a large pot of gold under a munificent rainbow.
