Sorry if this is on another thread - I'm just trying to find out a bit of background to some issues at Wigan North Western yesterday (Sunday 26/01/14); a colleague was on the 12:28 departure from Euston, 1C67, destination Preston. This got held at Wigan North Western because of 'overrunning engineering works', leading eventually to a delay of over two hours.

His train was 1C67 VT Euston to Lancaster - cancelled.

It looks like this TPE service passed through Wigan shortly after - but possibly before the extent of the issue was clear?
1S66 TPE to Edinburgh - left 6 late

Then this VT service from Birmingham was also cancelled:
1P65 VT from Birmingham

Eventually both VT trainloads were put onto 1S69, arriving Preston around 17:00.

I've told him about Delay Repay, and his delay was over two hours so he should be fully compensated; he's pleased about that, though annoyed that at no time did VT make any kind of announcement about it - so he wouldn't have claimed. (He was on an off-peak return, not an advance).

What I'm interested in is - why was this engineering work scheduled to complete halfway through the day? That's not a criticism, I'm just wondering what was special about this one. They could have cancelled services for the whole day, so by only cancelling the morning trains they were catering for people returning North after the weekend - which is good. But it sounds like a little bit of over-run, which wouldn't be the end of the world first thing on a Sunday morning, caused major disruption.

Also - any idea why the TPE service appears have to gone through (slowly) but VT was cancelled? Thinking about turnround for the return journey maybe?

I can imagine how frustrating it must have been to be stuck at Wigan, less than 15 minutes from Preston, for over two hours - and also how hard it is to conjure up buses on a Sunday afternoon!

So - not seeking to knock anyone, just wondering how it got so bad for a couple of unfortunate train loads.

May have been OHL issues as the TPE would almost certainly have been 185 diesel(s) operated, and the ex EUS service was booked for Pendolino electric operation, so maybe no AC power available?

The TPE would of most defiantly been cl185 operated therefore would be unaffected by OHLE problems, AFAIK no cl350 diagrams to Scotland at the weekend.
