"Overnighter" ticket?

Am travelling down from St Albans to Brighton on Sunday, staying overnight and travelling back Monday morning with a 16-25 railcard. National rail says the £22.05 off peak return (http://www.brfares.com/#faredetail?orig=SAC&dest=BTN&rlc=YNG&ldn=1&tkt=SVR) is the cheapest ticket but checking brfares suggests there's an "overnighter" ticket?

Validity is given as OUTDAY1RTNDAY2 with outbound restrictions on Monday-Saturday (nothing on Sundays?) and return restrictions on weekends. Does this mean the ticket is only valid for Friday-Saturday and Saturday-Sunday trips or will I be able to use it for my trip? It saves close to a tenner so I would like to use it if possible!

Looks like you can't use it Sunday to Monday, sorry:

If your outward journey is made on either a Friday or a Saturday (after 2pm) then you can return the next day (either the Saturday or Sunday) before midday

I'm assuming this is a temporary fare, as I thought you weren't allowed single/return fares that weren't called Anytime or (Super) Off Peak?

Some of these do make sense, though. I think the WCML "Weekender" tickets that VT used to have (slightly more expensive than the Saver but valid outward in the Friday evening peak to spread the load a bit) were a good idea.

It's a permanent ticket, I think it was bought in by FCC just before they left. Designed for people going out in London on Friday/Saturday night and coming back the morning after. Not valid on Sunday nights, sorry

How come they are allowed to do that? My understanding was that permanent single/return fares can only be Advance, (Super) Off Peak or Anytime.

It's an off-peak ticket with unusual restrictions. Southeastern have been selling them for years. Also, many super off-peak tickets are only valid at weekends or bank holidays.

So back to my question...how come they are allowed to do this? VT and I think East Coast withdrew the Weekender at the simplification, claiming that they were no longer allowed to offer it. The Network Awaybreak also went away around then I think (valid 5 days).

I don't know, but SE have been doing this for years. I'm curious to know why you are getting so upset about it.

Cheers for the advice guys, bit of a shame I couldn't use it but a touch over £20 for a return wasn't bad value either!

I'm not upset about it. I would just like, out of interest, to know why they are allowed such a ticket (a single/return outside the structure of the Fares Simplification) and VT apparently not. I'm sure there is a reason.

Is there a reason they don't offer Railcard discounts on these?
