Overnight stop

Can someone explain to me the rules about overnight stops? If I have a ticket which allows break of journey, am I alowed to stop overnight on the way? Does this apply to all tickets which allow a break of journey? In cluding day returns? Is there any restriction on the time of the resumed journey?

Using an Anytime or Off Peak return ticket (not Anytime Day or Off Peak Day) allow you to break the journey as many times as you like on the outbound and the return, including overnight, provided there is no doubling back (ie going through the same station twice) and this applies right up to the end of validity. There are exceptions and this depends on the little code (eg FE) you'll find just below the price.

Break of journey (Anytime tickets)
You may start, break and resume, or end your journey at any intermediate station along the route of travel.

Break of journey for an overnight stay is allowed. Where a journey continues into the next day, travel must resume before 1200 and no further break of journey is allowed except to change trains.

The return part of Anytime Return tickets can be used for travel on any train within one calendar month of the outward journey. Travel is allowed until 0230 on the day following the last day of validity. If you are still travelling at 0230 then you may stay on the train to complete that part of the journey, but no further break of journey is allowed and all travel must be completed by 1200.

NOTE: Cross London transfers will not be accepted by London Underground during this extension period.

I stand corrected.

But yes, that is the basic framework for whether or not an overnight BoJ will be allowed.

Outward portions of off peak returns do not permit overnight break either just the return portion
