Years ago, of course, it was one of only a handful of stations with a 24 hour refreshment room!

Crewe is a horrible station to wait at in the evenings, even at the best of times. Even if you could, you wouldn’t want to overnight there. It’s cold, draughty and AFAIK the indoor seating areas get locked up after the departure of the Caledonian Sleeper. Possible they wait until the 0044 to Manchester has gone but I can’t be sure of that.

Well you can by a through ticket from Hartford to Chester arriving Crewe at 00:20 and departing 04:19.

That’s not necessarily indicative of anything - you can buy tickets with overnight connections at many stations which categorically shut overnight eg Lime Street.

Seconded. Facilities there aren't great - poor opening hours for the bar/cafes too and its a windy and draughty station with only a small indoor seating area which is always incredibly busy often with no seats.

Preston is even worse. Was stuck there on a Sunday evening for 90 minutes with our 2 young children and the missus after train cancellations to Warrington on the way back from Blackpool - station virtually deserted and every cafe and bar closed even though it was only about 7.30pm. Not fun when you have to all sit on a bench with antsy kids for that long.

That seems to imply that it is open 24 hours per day, but waiting rooms close at 19:00, and toilets close between 02:00 and 04:00.

As others say, not a comfortable place to wait overnight, and best avoided if you have an alternative.

Sitting around somewhere like Crewe for longer than necessary? To be avoided at all costs! Protection from the wind in that place is hard enough to find on a good day, never mind late at night!

I'd agree with the person who suggested the 0044 to Manchester Airport, that is a far superior option than hanging around Crewe.

The waiting room and calm corner, both on platform 5 at Crewe, have opening times on the door as 05:00 until 12:00 midnight. Not sure if these times are still current and don't know about the toilet opening times at Crewe though.

I wouldn't overnight at Crewe if you paid me: Grotty, cold, windy.

Unlike 1984 there wont be much overnight traffic to look at either. Don't do it. Go home or book a hotel.

I spent half a night on Preston Station once after a Highland Sleeper cancellation.

Would I do it again? Given the choice, absolutely not.

Was it *that* bad? Not really, to be honest. They kept the waiting room and the accessible toilet open for me by special arrangement. I'd been told before leaving Crewe to male myself known to Preston staff, though they seemed to be expecting me. Ordered a pizza, cracked a few beers open, used the plug sockets to watch a few episodes and got an hour or so kip lay across the seats.
