Hi,

I have an return ticket from Leeds to Newbury (return within a month). I planned to do the trip in one day, but have a quick question.

If I decide to break my return journey with an overnight stay in London, would the ticket still be valid? The most frequent route would involve Newbury-Paddington, then Kings Cross to Leeds. If breaking the return leg of my journey overnight is not allowable, then I could simply buy a single ticket from Newbury to London, stay overnight, and then use the return portion of my ticket to travel back to Leeds, but would prefer not to have to pay extra if not necessary.

Thanks for any advice :)

Welcome to the forum :)

Yes, it is valid for any number of days overnight in London (or anywhere else on a permitted route) :)

If your ticket is a Super Off Peak, then restrictions apply between London & Leeds, but not between Newbury and London, this is because Newbury is in the 'Network area'

NETWORK AREA:
The London & South East
Network Area is shown in the
London Area Fares section
LONDON.

Super Off-Peak tickets issued
for journeys commencing WITHIN
the network area to
destinations outside the
Network Area with travel via
London are valid by any train
to London to connect with
trains from London.
So your ticket is valid on any train from Newbury to London, if your ticket is a Super Off Peak ticket, you can use any train from King's Cross "Between 0929 and 1457 inclusive & at or after 1859. Also allowed at or after 1815 on Fridays only." If it is an Off Peak ticket, you can leave King's Cross "at any time".

You are also allowed one journey on London Underground from Paddington to a London Terminal on that ticket. If you require more to get to/from your accommodation in London, an Oyster Pay as you Go card may be useful.

Thanks for the advice. I have a super off peak, which is a bit annoying as it means if I decide to travel back the same day I'll have to wait until it's valid from London, or go via Birmingham.

Useful info though, thank you.

It's quite weird, that the restrictions are less severe on a Friday ..?
The 'peak' for business users finishes earlier on a Friday, but more leisure people wish to travel, if you made them all wait the 1900/1903 services would be severely overcrowded.
