Hello. I have read the relevant section of the fare guides on this forum; and would like to confirm the following is permitted.

I need to travel from Elmstead Woods to Newhaven Town to catch the 09h00 ferry to Dieppe on a Saturday morning. As I cannot get there in time on the Saturday, I plan to leave Friday late afternoon/early evening and spend the night in a B & B in Lewes, then take an early train from Lewes to Newhaven on the Saturday.

Is this permitted with an Off-Peak return, or would I need a separate Lewes-Newhaven ticket on the Saturday; and if Yes, are there any particular restriction about how early or late I can start each leg (i.e., must be after xx.xx on Friday and before xx.xx on Saturday)?

As far as I can tell this should be permitted under the two-day rule; but there are always local exceptions. Many thanks.

There is no specific break of journey restriction on that ticket. The general one is as follows:

Off-Peak Singles and the
outward portion of Off-Peak
Returns are valid for travel
on the date shown on the
ticket and until 04:29 the
following morning. If the
journey cannot be completed in
this time, the ticket may be
used to continue the journey
on the following day. Unless
otherwise indicated in the
relevant restriction code,
time restrictions apply as
from the initial origin
station on both days. The
appropriate restrictions for
the actual day on which travel
is being undertaken apply (for
example, it may be that day 1
is on Sunday, no restrictions
apply, but on day 2, the
Monday-Friday restrictions
apply). All travel must be
completed by 04:29 in the
morning after this second day.
Please note that break of
journey is not permitted on
some journeys, as detailed in
the ticket restrictions.

So provided you leave late enough on the Friday that you couldn't make it all the way I can't see a problem. Whether you can choose to break is something for debate (I know some think you can, I think you can't based on the above), so if you can get all the way leaving at the time you wish to you may be best advised to instead find a hotel in Newhaven.
