Overnight at Holyhead

Evening all,

Does anyone know how many trains of which unit type are stored at Holyhead overnight ready for the next morning? I know there are ecs movements as I live right next to the line between the Britannia Bridge and Bangor Station and hear them go past later at night but I wasn't sure what was left there. I have looked online and the first service to arrive into Holyhead looks to be well after 8am yet trains run past my house by 5am heading towards Chester. Equally which trains leave ecs at the end of the days service? Finally I would like to know the relevant ecs diagrams if anyone has them. Thanks in advance Chris

i think the Arriva 57 + mk2 stock remains at Holyhead overnight for the Cardiff bound early morning service. other forum users will have more info.

In a nutshell. Overnight at Holyhead

1."Gerald" class 57 the ATW Premier train to Cardiff,

2.Several Voyager units, for Euston

3.Class 175 units for Cardiff, this is the first out about 0430

4.Class 158 units for Birmingham (to be avoided if possible)

Others will give chapter & verse.

As far as I know there's very little ECS working to and from Holyhead. Service trains start leaving Holyhead at 0425, which would come past your neck of the woods just before 5. Eight passenger trains leave Holyhead before the first service of the day arrives, and a matching number arrive after the 2037 leaves at night, so I expect they're all stabled there overnight.

The only semi-regular ECS/light engine workings I know of were on weekends with a 57 coming from Crewe to swap with the engine on the Gerallt Gymro set, but recently the loco is used to bring the Saturday Pendolino drag from Crewe to Holyhead, with the replaced loco dragging it back to Crewe before going for it's service.

There are a few Voyager ECS workings from Crewe to Holyhead, from around 0400 to 0700 daily. I used to see one movement pass Bangor around 0600, and around 0630.

Other than the weekly 57 ECS, not much Arriva wise, and there are quite a few possesions along the Coast this time of the year too.

i'm very aware of the possesions, having been awoken on more than one occasion by various plant activity in the small hours. I knew there must be some ecs as i've heard it pass by. Since posting I have found some information on the voyager diagrams on thejunction.org which shows some ecs from holyhead to crewe each evening and again in the morning. I was really just wondering how many of which units are left, as the sidings at holyhead don't look big enough for all the trains that pass west after the last service east has left

"Gerald" is usually parked up on its departure platform overnight,Id say there is plenty of room for 3 voyager sets and two & three coach DMUs, the last arrival about 2.30a.m from Birmingham is probably the first out to Cardiff 0430a.m., so remains on its platform.

Three Voyager sets seems a lot overnight - do they run any "double" Voyagers between Holyhead and Chester?

I have seen two sets doubled up on a Sunday from Holyhead, I know at the moment the first VT out of Holyhead doubles up at Crewe with one from the North,the second VT out doubles up at Chester with the Wrexham set.

There are three sets kept overnight at Holyhead, they are ex Euston 17/10,18/10,19/10/
then out at 4/48,5/53/6/55 ex HDD

On the top of my head, 04:48 joins a set at Crewe, which is from Lancaster.

05:53 joins the Wrexham-Euston at Chester
06:55 & 08:55 are single sets throughout.

Agree, the 0855 ex HDD arrived from Birmingham(ex 5.30ish) and was the
previous evenings VT Bangor to Birmingham, I am aware light servicing takes place at HHD,but this train I understand is serviced in the Midlands,in its turn.

The main servicing depot is Central Rivers TMD near Burton-on-Trent which services 220/221/222's
