NRE reported overhead wire problems at Warrington Bank Quay Yesterday.

It seems to have caused quite a lot of disruption

It sees that most down trains used platform 4 and the down slow. Most up trains are reported by RTT a having used Platform 3 (down fast).

Does anyone know exactly where this happened and what arrangements were used to get trains moving again?

Some trains were diverted between Golborne Jn and Crewe via Manchester, but most were cancelled/turned short.
ATW ran Chester-Warrington so presumably the problems were between Bank Quay and Winwick Jn.
Resolved around mid-day I think, unless this was just when the P3/4 workaround started.

And could someone explain what we're seeing here, please? There seems to be more wires than my limited understanding can figure out.

The wires connected to the overhead and then descending to earth are earthing straps to ensure the OLE can't be made live again while it's being worked on. The wire dangling over the OLE upper centre of photo is presumably what caused the problem - but I don't know where it came from!

My wife went Christmas shopping to Manchester on the 0745 from Llandudno, which came to a stand in Warrington BQ at 0920, with no-one being sure what was going to happen. She phoned me, and as it looked like it was not going to be resolved quickly, I advised her to cross to Warrington Central, which she did, and caught the 0959 to Manchester Oxford Rd, arriving some 40 minutes later than planned. This turned out to be a good move, as I later learned her original train had been cancelled at BQ!

She returned on the 1752 ex Piccadilly, which was late starting and travelled very slowly through the area, so the knock-on effect was still being felt then. It was even later into Chester, and got put out behind the 1710 Virgin to Holyhead, and was eventually terminated at Llandudno Junction.

So not a good day for ATW, but I reckon the delay compensation should buy the odd Christmas present!

But not fault of ATW

They were advising Manchester passengers to route via Crewe.
(But not much help to those already east of Chester).

Virgin had also told a lot of their passengers to go via crewe to Manchester to pick up Scotland services, this caused all sorts of chaos at Crewe.

I went to Crewe from Chester as directed by the guard on my ATW Llandudno to Manchester, when I arrived at Crewe all the trains were arriving packed already and the platforms where full, me and the children had to wait as we couldn't board the train we were meant to catch as it was full and police and platform staff had to hold people back as they furiously tried to pile on!!

I'm sure it was a long day for the staff at Crewe and other surrounding stations on Saturday. The staff, to be fair were smiling their way through it and very helpful even though there were a lot of angry passengers.

:( Got caught up at Preston as a result of this. A number of trains for a period after 0930 (mainly those routed to travel north or south on the WCML via Warrington Bank Quay) initially showing as "Delayed" then "Cancelled".

Presumably a number of southbound Euston bound workings were subsequently terminated at Preston so that they could travel back up north but I'd given up by then.
