Overground pauses outside Richmond

Hi. When the Overground nears Richmond in the evening, it often stops just outside for a minute or two, presumably at a red signal. It then gets going, often just after another Overground has passed the other way.

Does anyone know why this is? There are several platforms at Richmond, so it doesn't have to wait for one to become empty.

It's frustrating as this often makes it late and I miss my connection!

Possibly the signal is approach controlled if it's not a through platform

Judging by http://carto.metro.free.fr/cartes/metro-london/ if the departing Overground train is on any of platforms 3, 4, or 5 then it has to cross in front of the arriving train.

Just what I was going to check. I guess that assumes that the departure has priority/timing over the arrival, though.

I can see what you're saying.

The particular train is the 18:08 from Willesden Junction to Richmond, which arrives at 18:28.

The outgoing one must be the 18:23, so I guess it runs a few minutes late quite often ?

It will get held at the home signal to allow a Lorol or a district out of (3) 4,5 (3) been only accessible to Lorol. Due to the way the track work is laid out.

Same at Wimbledon if your referring to the district line unless the train your on is going into platform 4 you can expect it to get held. Although I think the approach signal is speed controlled it tequires the train to stop then it clears for platform 4. If your going into 1,2,3 at Wimbledon you may need to wait for a train to depart to let you in.

There is also a District due to arrive at 18:21. It looks like this often runs a couple of minutes late, which means the 18:23 has to wait for departure, which in turn means your train is held outside Richmond.

Isn't there still the tripcock in place to prevent District Line trains from entering Platform 3? London Overground trains have to trip it, then reset to be able to enter 3. Unless this has changed recently?

If nothing else, if the departing train leaves from the left platform (as seen from your approach) it will have to cross in front of you. If your train is given priority into an empty platform the outgoing one will have to wait, so someone will lose out either way.
