overdistance excess question

If I have an anytime day return from point A to point B and wish to excess to point c and the original ticket has no railcard discount, is it possible to get a railcard discount on the new ticket.

It's not one I have seen before asked. I would assume no but I would like an official answer.

Railcard discounts can only be used on the excess if the original ticket was discounted.

Thought that was the case, just wanted to get clarity.
