Overcharging by TVM

I realised today that a ticket I buy frequently (Reading-Didcot SDR) is 10p more expensive on the TVM than it should be. The correct fare is charged at the counter.

Is this common and how does it happen? I would have thought the TVMs would access the same fares database as the ticket office, and if not at least the fares would be correct when loaded onto it.

At a time when passengers are increasingly pushed to use machines or buy online this is completely unacceptable - sure, in this case it's a small amount but that may not always be the case (plus my usual bugbear of TVMs not offering all tickets and their lack of fare clarity when multiple routes are available).

Is it a railcard discounted fare? Sometimes rounding errors occur. You should definitely report it though.

Do you have a Railcard? There were some changes to the rounding process and it all depends where the TIS are in their Accreditation cycle as to what they'll charge.

What it is is the Reading or Reading West (0403) to Didcot ticket is £12.40. The Reading (3149/RDG) to Didcot ticket is £12.50. Thats where the error lies.

Might be worth leaving it, it’s probably been noticed and corrected anyways by now, but any correction will probably be an increase in the cheaper fare to match the more expensive.
