The other day I asked for a day return from Cross Gates to Halifax, and an anytime return from Cross Gates to Rotherham for the same day. I was sold my first ticket no problem, but as I would have to change in Leeds to get the Rotherham train I was sold a single Leeds to Rotherham and a single Rotherham tomLeeds for the day I am travelling back.

I feel like I've been overcharged here as my first ticket is £8.10 and a Cross Gates Rotherham anytime return is about £13 yet I was charged around £30

Were you intending on doing a journey like Cross Gates - Leeds - Halifax - Leeds - Rotherham - (next day) - Leeds?

It does sound like the guard may have been trying to do you a favour but inadvertently ending up overcharging you, as the Anytime Return from Leeds is very expensive (thanks to Virgin East Coast).
