So... I have a first open single from Cardiff Central to Manchester Stations booked for Friday booked through my corporate travel agent.

My plans have changed now and I need the ticket to start from Llantwit Major and go through to Manchester Airport. I have spoken to my travel agent and they say the only way to make a change is to cancel that ticket (£10 refund charge) and book a new ticket. Can anyone tell me if it is possible to go to a manned station tomorrow and pay an excess before I start the journey on Friday morning? The difference in fare is around £1.50.

Thanks in advance!

Excess fares at ticket offices are a bit of a lottery, but by the rules, only the destination can change on an 'over-riding' ('over-distance') excess (and you'd have to go via the original destination). If you check the permitted routes, it may be possible to 'go to Manchester via Manchester Airport' (change at Crewe and/or Wilmslow).

Absolutely, Manchester Airport is on the way from Crewe to Manchester Piccadilly (see: Styal line - the Airport station is a spur off this line). So providing you go that way there is no extra to pay.

As HHF says, you would need to change at Wilmslow (or Crewe).

If you can find a willing and capable member of staff, you will get your excess from Llantwit Major and I am pretty sure about that. I doubt many staff will go, "You can excess your ticket at one end but not the other."

 Is there a ticket office open at Llantwit Major? TVM only, I believe.
