Over 5 with no ticket!

I was under the misapprehension that child fares didn't kick in until closer to 10 and have travelled at least twice without a ticket for my child before realising.

I have had my tickets checked on both occasions and one of the inspectors gave my child a toy ticket with a picture of a dog on it!

Obviously going forward I'll be buying them their own ticket (with the benefit of being able to book adjacent seats!) but I wondered what happens if the inspector had asked to see the child's ticket - is it the responsible adult that would receive the penalty fare? I assumed so, but no stupid questions and all that!

If you travel regularly with your child you should seriously consider buy in a Family & FriendsRailcard. It will cost £35 for a year but an adult and child ticket with the discount is cheaper than an undiscounted adult ticket.
