Outwood to Sheff

Hi folks,

Next week I need to get from home near Outwood stn to Sheffield as quick as possible early afternoon (have to be there by 1400 at the latest).

I do have my car, but I’d rather not just drive to Meadowhall to P&R if possible, as I don’t want to deal with 25 miles of M1 traffic on my way home.

National Rail suggests getting the train from Outwood at 1228 and changing 3x (Outwood > Westgate > Kirkgate > Meadowhall then a RR bus to SHF); could probably reduce this by 15 mins by parking at Kirkgate but are there any other better options?

Is there much parking near Barnsley station for example?

Ticket acceptance is in place with Supertram so you could simply catch the 11:59 Outwood - Rotherham direct service which arrives on Platform 1 at Rotherham then head across to Platform 4 for the :59 or :30 tram train straight into the centre of Sheffield (takes about 20-25 minutes)

(Obviously you still need to buy a Outwood - Sheffield rail ticket rather than a Outwood - Rotherham ticket!)

The traffic at that time is not too bad on the M1 and it’s a relatively simple drive. The only issue maybe getting a parking spot at Meadowhall, although possibly some cars will be leaving the station car park by that time. I believe there is now parking enforcement on the shopping centre car park.

Why don’t you just take the direct train from Outwood at 1200. Admittedly, it isn’t fast but you’ll be there for 1300 and it avoids all faffing around?

Engineering works all next week so no direct train

Having said that you as an alternative to my Supertram advice above as it looks like Northern are sorting out rail replacement buses between Rotherham and Sheffield too, so you can actually catch the 11:59 Outwood to Rotherham then 13:05 rail replacement bus to Sheffield - depends where you want to be in Sheffield I guess as the tram will take you right to Fitzalan Square/Castle Square/Cathedral whilst presumably the bus will drop you off somewhere near the station!

Due to planned improvement works in the Sheffield area, services will be affected between Monday 2 and Friday 6 February 2026.

Trains between York / Leeds / Doncaster / Adwick and Sheffield / Lincoln will not run.

Rail replacement buses will run between:

• York and Moorthorpe
• Meadowhall / Rotherham Central and Sheffield
• Sheffield and Lincoln

Timetables are available in online journey planners - please use them to check how your journey might be affected.

During this engineering work, Northern tickets can be used on South Yorkshire Supertram services between Rotherham, Meadowhall and Sheffield.

And I would imagine using the tram will be a lot quicker than the replacement bus

replacement bus departs Rotherham Central 13:05 and arrives Sheffield Interchange bus station (across road from railway station) 13:35, tram is indeed quicker if you want Sheffield City Centre but about the same if you need to be at Sheffield station.
