Outward to Amberley, back from Portslade

Hi - some advice needed. I am planning a hike along the South Downs from Amberley to Portslade, taking the train from London to Amberley and back from Portslade. What is the best ticket / combination for this? It would be on a Saturday or Sunday. My initial thought was to get an off-peak day return from London to Littlehampton, would this be valid for both legs of the journey? The only other way would seem to be a return from London to Gatwick and then singles from Gatwick to Amberley and Portslade to Gatwick.

An Off Peak Day Return (route "Any Permitted") from London to/from Littlehampton (or to/from Ford) would be £40.10. An appropriate railcard would bring this down to £26.70. Might possibly be splitting opportunities at an intermediate station.

If you can decide in advance on which day you're travelling, you might just be able to make use of the 'Southern Day Save' (day ranger) ticket, which, I think, normally has to be booked a few days in advance. Not 100% sure of the price of this, it might currently be £19.00; anyone able to confirm price and availability?

P.S. Weather currently looking a little better on Saturday (26th).

London to Littlehampton is valid via Brighton, Crawley & Horsham, Dorking & Horsham, so definitely includes your proposed itinerary.

Southern Day Save now £26.00 (there’s a group one for up to 4adults for £52). Must be booked online 3 days before travel then picked up from a tvm at a Southern station (5 days in advance if you’re picking it up from a different toc)

If you're willing to commit to fixed times a couple of weeks or so before travelling, there are advance singles to Amberley from £10 and back from Portslade from £8 (undiscounted). It depends how much you value on-the-day flexibility whether that's a worthwhile saving.
