I used to live:

maybe 3 minutes walk from Finchley Road tube (Met and Jubilee lines)
maybe 7 minutes walk from South Hampstead rail (Overground to Euston)
maybe 10 minutes walk from Swiss Cottage tube (Jubilee)
maybe 10 minutes walk from West Hampstead tube and rail stations (Jubilee line, Overground NLL, Thameslink)
maybe 20 minutes walk from Kilburn Park tube (Bakerloo)
maybe 25 minutes walk from Belsize Park tube (Northern)
(with other stations on some of these lines being a similar distance away)
Plus lots and lots of buses to central London along Finchley Road (3 mins walk), the 139 and 189 along Abbey Road (5 mins walk), with the 31, 328 (both around 5 mins walk away in different places) and C11 (1 min walk) offering cross-town options.

So. Yes, that part of London (essentially the eastern side of West Hampstead) is very well conncected indeed.

EALING BROADWAY

GWR and Heathrow Connect services, plus LU Central and District Lines. Also, Ealing Common and South Ealing nearby for the Piccadilly Line.
I missed this one, but if you hoped to use the Heathrow Connect then having an alternative is doubtless necessary, given that it must be the most unreliable service in London, the way the staff/trains are plundered to keep the Express running whenever there's any issue.

Cambridge. GN and GA south and you can also go via Peterborough if need be.

Stretches the definition of "Outer London" a little!

But yes, valid. In a good situation of being 55+ miles from London, but *both* routes being relatively competitive with each other on journey times (and fares!). Unlike, say, Reading.

Things would have to be pretty badly disrupted to consider a jaunt via Peterborough though!

You're quite right, my mistake

The Whetstone area of London is pretty well connected. :)

Northern Line from Totteridge & Whetstone
Piccadilly Line from Arnos Grove
GN from New Southgate

If things become so badly disrupted and all these options go up in smoke - and yes, this happened with a certain tube strike!:

20 minutes bus ride to LO from Silver Street

I liked living in Beckenham.

Normal commute was from New Beckenham to Central London, but in the event of problems, just walk to Beckenham Junction or Kent House. Job done!

Same for Sydenham. Sydenham and Penge East are only a 10 mins walk down Venner Road (the Orpington platform entrance is in Sydenham). Theres also Lower Sydenham and Sydenham Hill too, you should always be able to get into Central London by train.

You beat me to it.

Sydenham or Penge West (Overground to Stratford/Westfield) or Southern to London Bridge and Croydon)

New Beckenham (Southeastern for Charing Cross)

Penge East or Kent House (Southeastern for Victoria and Bromley).

A short distance away is Crystal Palace (Southern to Victoria)

As a child (and young man) I lived near the river in Chiswick. 7 minutes walk to Chiswick station on the Hounslow loop. 55 (now E3) bus to Turnham Green for Chiswick Park (or a bit further on the bus Turnham Green station) and about 20 minutes walk to Gunnersbury on the NLL. Gunnersbury was useful to me for a short while when I worked in the City and it went to Broad Street. From Turnham Green, before the Piccadilly was extended, the 91 bus would take me to Heathrow.

When I left home my parents moved to a place much nearer to Turnham Green station which reversed some of the timings! I don't think they ever went up to the GWR main but I suppose they could have. They also had direct access to the 88 (which isn't the 88 any more) bus through Shepherds Bush to Oxford Street.

WATFORD

Not strictly London I know, but inside the M25 so pretty much London.

London Midland and London Overground trains from Watford Junction to Central London.

Southern trains to West and South London, also from Watford Junction, providing great connections at Clapham Junction.

Metropolitan Line services from Watford into Central London.

And if you live on the west side of Watford, you also have the Chiltern services from Rickmansworth not too far away.

WOOLWICH

South Eastern and DLR trains into Central London
Thames Clipper river boats.
Buses to plenty of other stations on other lines not too far away.

I don't think this is as resilient as it sounds as a signal failure in the Croydon/Windmill Jn area demonstrated last night! Southern/GatEx/Thameslink all share the same tracks and signalling

True but with LO, Tramlink, and even SE services running reasonably close to Croydon, there are alternatives.

That said, I can imagine the chaos a signal failure on the main line running through East Croydon would cause.

Sorry to be a pedant but that was East Croydon you were on about. your right abotu it though as a quick tram ride away to Wes and a plethora of buses to get you somewhere else.
